SAFE BET
(Vocaloid, Kagamine Rin, Kagamine Len, consensual, casual, falling from height to death)
It was an ordinary morning and the Kagamine twins were on their ordinary way to school when suddenly they saw something unordinary: a cat jumping out of a window. It was high enough that the twins couldn’t even tell at a glance what floor it was exactly. Len gasped in shock, but then sighed in relief when the cat masterfully landed on its legs and casually walked away as if nothing happened.
“Damn,” Len tilted his head. “Cats sure are awesome!”
“Nothing special,” Rin shrugged, not really impressed.
“Oh, yeah? I bet there’s no way a human could jump from such height and stay unharmed,” Len proclaimed. “Even more so if you scale the height with the human size, that would be like jumping off a skyscraper!”
“So you say you bet?” Rin smirked. “Alright, I’m in! Let’s jump off a skyscraper and settle it… but after school, okay?”
“Why not right away?” Len couldn’t help but giggle at the idea. “We won’t need school when we’re just two lumps of bloody mess!”
“Make it one lump of bloody mess,” Rin noted. “Unlike you, I intend to survive it.”
“Whatever you say,” Len laughed.
Surely, Rin couldn’t be serious? Len figured out she just found it extra funny to pretend she could somehow stay alive, so he decided to play along. Len was confident that there was no way to survive jumping off a skyscraper, so he had nothing to worry about. This was the safest bet ever.
The school day went as usual, with some boring classes and some interesting ones. The twins have even attended the music club and had fun time with their friends there. Len was wondering if there was any point in rehearsing songs for their upcoming concert, seeing how they weren’t going to make it there. But why care about a point when it’s just a fun thing to do? After all, the same was true about their bet in the first place. Len didn’t really care about proving a point and he knew neither was Rin. It was such an obvious point anyway and there was no way Rin genuinely believed she could survive. But it was exactly because of how pointless this bet was that made it so fun to follow through.
And so after school the twins didn’t bother to come home and instead headed downtown right away. At first Rin wanted to jump off the tallest building in the city, but it belonged to a corporation that was strict about security and didn’t let the twins in without an appointment. Oh well, not big deal, they just went with a smaller skyscraper that housed offices of many different companies, so each just assumed the twins were heading to another one. And that’s how they got to the roof.
The sun was starting to set down, casting a warm golden glow over the city and painting the sky orange, making the view from the top astounding. The twins could see the whole city in all its glory, and even that tallest skyscraper they didn’t get in still towering over them was only adding to the picture. Len tried and could almost make out their own home far away. He chuckled, picturing how their mother must be preparing dinner for them right now, oblivious to the fact they were going to die in a minute. He wanted to see what sort of face she would make at seeing her children’s mangled remains. Of course, there was no way for him to actually see it, but that only made wanting it all the more amusing.
The twins came up to the edge of the roof and looked down at the busy street. Cars and pedestrians were each hurrying somewhere only they knew where. And it was all so far down, that just looking from such a height made the twins’ heads spin. The risk of falling down made them involuntarily step back and grab each other’s hand for support. And then they looked at each other and laughed. Why would they be afraid of falling down, if the whole reason they were here was to jump off? Without any words, still holding hands and laughing at their instinctual reaction, the twins took a run towards the edge and merrily leaped forward.
As twins plummeted towards the ground, they felt a rush of adrenaline and excitement coursing through their veins. Jumping towards certain death made the twins feel more alive than ever. The wind was whipping past them, and they feel weightless and free from any worries. Everything around seemed to blur and the twins could only see each other. It was as if the rest of the world disappeared and only the two of them remained for each other. Nothing else mattered anymore and the twins could simply enjoy the moment in their togetherness. It was such a blissful euphoria that Len has almost forgotten about their bet. That is, until Rin smirked mischievously, let go of Len’s hand and deployed her parachute.
Her parachute!? Len watched in confusion as Rin soared up into the sky, her parachute billowing behind her. Then he burst into laughter when he realized what was going on. Of course, parachute IS the human way of jumping from extreme height and surviving. After all, the bet was exactly about that: surviving the jump. It didn’t say anything about there having to be a hard impact with the ground. So the reason Rin insisted on putting it off until after school must have been for her to have time to procure a hidden parachute. Len had no idea how she managed that, but he applauded her resourcefulness and ingenuity.
In his last seconds alive, Len was not looking toward the ground, but admiring his sister up above. He was not at all disappointed to lose the bet. From the start it was never about winning or losing, but about having fun along the way. And Rin outsmarting him with a parachute has certainly upped the fun to the new level! It was a pleasant surprise that he wholeheartedly welcomed. He even appreciated the little detail that Rin didn’t keep holding him for both of them to land safely on her parachute, and instead she let him go so that he fell to his death anyway. It didn’t change the outcome of their bet, he would’ve still lost it anyway, but it made it just a little bit more fun, and that was what really mattered. Rin was the best siSPLAT!
When Len hit the ground, Rin laughed so hard that she almost lost control of the parachute. Looking back at his sister all the way he couldn’t see his death coming. He was just enjoying himself without care and he never knew this joy ending. When his merry laughter that had no intention of stopping was abruptly cut off by the resounding splat of his body smearing across the asphalt, it was truly the funniest thing Rin has heard in her life. She might’ve won the bet, but Len certainly got the best laugh out of it!
