I'm not sure I follow, because if you meant to say that breaking the routine helps, then there's nothing paradoxical about it, it makes perfect sense. The problem remains in how to break the routine. Firstly, my brain almost physically resists thinking about real world, as it's difficult and scary and hopeless. Secondly, I have a ton of things that I started and never finished, which makes me feel like starting anything new is pointless because I'll just abandon it too. This is where the "I can only make myself do things that I feel like I can finish in one go" comes from. Thirdly, what exactly should I do to break the routine… something different enough to actually break the routine, yet easy enough for me to feel like I can actually do it. Fourthly, how to avoid it just becoming a part of the routine. A few months ago I bought a VR headset and it was a blast… for a week or two. Then it just started feeling as pointless and boring as anything else.

Stop putting words in my mouth.
First of all, I'm not whining about people not reading my stories, I'm whining about the site feeling dead. Of course, site being more alive would also include (but not be limited to) more people commenting letting me know they enjoy my stories, which naturally would make me happier. But, you see, I never said I don't care if people read my stories or not. Of course I care. What I did say is that I don't see a point in switching from the current audience that shares my tastes to a different audience that doesn't share my tastes. There will be audience either way, but if I switch I wouldn't be having fun in the process. So you go entertain your audience and I'll keep entertaining mine, this way both audiences will have something for them.
