the only way how you can respond to that is that you don't know or as you say you ignore that part and that they may be immortal or there can be something else and event are just limited to the story without any information on what happens outside of the story or how things work.
If I complained about something in that carousel story it was exactly this issue it was unrelated to the story but rather about the interpretation of the story I did made a suggestion but you are not obligated to follow anything
and it doesn't even matter that you are story author you can say what was your intent but you can't tell how things work there if it is written in the story otherwise If you want readers to see things the wasy you want you have to write them in the way that they see them as you want
