It was a day like any other when my worst nightmare came true. I was only nine years old, too young to fully understand the events that were about to unfold but old enough to feel the fear creeping into my bones. I held onto my father's hand as we made our way to the Culling center, a place I have only heard whispers about.
I am Ben, and my older brother is Ryan, he is thirteen. Our father, John, is a strong man with a kind heart. He has always protected us and kept us safe, but in this moment, I could see the fear in his eyes. The fear of losing his family.
As we arrived at the Culling center, we were separated and instructed to strip naked. I felt a wave of embarrassment wash over me as I looked around at the other families. But we did as we were told, stripping down to our bare skin. Next, we were instructed to put our hands behind our backs, and we complied, feeling vulnerable and exposed.
My heart was racing as we were led to a gallows. I had only seen such a thing in pictures, but I never thought I would be standing under one with a noose around my neck. A worker came and tied nooses around our necks, and we were all sporting full erections. I didn't understand why, but it seemed to be happening to everyone around me. I looked at Ryan, and he looked just as scared as I was.
I could hear my heart pounding in my ears as my father leaned down and whispered in my ear, 'Be brave, son. Fight the noose, we have to stay alive as long as possible.' I could hear the desperation in his voice, and I knew he was trying to protect us.
I looked at my father and whispered back, 'I'm scared, daddy. I don't want to die.'
My father's eyes filled with tears as he replied, 'I know, son. But we have to be strong, for each other.'
I held back my tears as the noose tightened around my neck, cutting off my air supply. I could see Ryan and my father struggling, their faces turning red as they fought for breath. I tried to stay strong, just like my father said, but the pain was unbearable. I could feel my body convulsing as my vision began to blur.
I couldn't believe this was happening. That our government would do this to innocent families, just to control overpopulation. I couldn't even imagine the pain my father and brother were going through, and it made me angry. Angry at the government for taking away our lives, for making us suffer like this.
But most of all, I was scared. Scared of not being able to protect my family, scared of facing death at such a young age. I wanted to believe my father's words, that our deaths would be slow and painful, but I couldn't help but think that maybe it would be quick and painless.
As the nooses began to raise us off the ground, I could hear the screams and cries of other families around us. It only added to the fear and horror of the situation. But my father's words replayed in my mind, and I fought against the noose with all my might.
But eventually, my body gave up, and I passed out from lack of oxygen. When I woke up, I was no longer hanging from the gallows. I looked around, confused, until I saw my father and brother lying on the ground next to me. They were still, and I knew they were gone.
Tears streamed down my face as I watched the next family being brought in. Their cries and pleas for mercy only brought back the fear and pain I had just endured. I wanted to look away, to block out the horror, but I couldn't move. My body was in shock, and my mind was in a state of disbelief.
As I took my last breath, I closed my eyes and thought of my family. I was only nine years old, too young to understand why this was happening, but old enough to know that I would never see my family or my future again. I was just another victim of the government's ruthless culling measures.
