My name is Jacob and I am only 10 years old. I never thought I would be facing this kind of terror at such a young age. But here I am, standing with my younger brother, Peter, and my father, among a group of other people who have been sentenced to death by hanging.
I am holding on to Peter's hand tightly, trying to find some comfort in the midst of this nightmare. My father stands next to us, his face grim and determined but I can see the fear in his eyes. I know he is trying to be strong for us, but I can tell he is just as scared as we are.
The three of us have been stripped naked and forced to stand in front of a crowd of onlookers. I can see other children around my age among the crowd, their faces filled with fear and disbelief. Some of them are crying, others are screaming for mercy.
But there is no mercy here. We have been chosen to die and there is no escape.
I turn to my father, tears streaming down my face. 'Daddy, I don't want to die,' I whisper, my voice trembling.
My father's face softens as he pulls both of us into a hug. 'I know, my boys. I don't want to die either. But we don't have a choice. We must be brave and face our fate,' he says, trying to reassure us.
But I can see the fear in his eyes, and it only terrifies me more. Is he lying to us? Will dying be painful?
'Daddy, is it true that dying is not painful?' I ask, my voice quivering.
My father hesitates before answering. 'Dying itself is not painful, but the process of being killed can be. I cannot lie to you, my son,' he says softly, tears in his eyes.
I hold on to my father's words, trying to find some comfort. But as the executioner calls us up one by one, I can feel my heart pounding in my chest. We are each to be hanged to death, the others forced to watch as we slowly strangle to our deaths.
I watch as my best friend, Lucas, is called up and my heart breaks as he begs and pleads for his life. But the executioner pays no heed to his cries, and slowly, Lucas is lifted into the air. I can see the fear in his eyes as he struggles against the rope, his face turning red and his body shaking.
I cannot bear to watch as Lucas takes his last breath and his body falls limp. But I know I have to be strong, for my brother.
And so, when it is my turn, I walk up to the gallows with my head held high, trying to find some bravery in me. But as the executioner ties the noose around my neck, I can feel my resolve breaking.
My body is shaking as I am lifted into the air, and the air is thinning as the rope tightens around my neck. I can feel the pressure building in my head, my vision blurring. But I try to hold on, for a little longer, for my brother, for my father.
I glance over at my father, who is standing next to me, and I can see the tears in his eyes. But he is trying to stay strong for us, and in that moment, I am filled with pride and love for my father. I know that he did everything he could to protect us, but it was not enough.
As I start to lose consciousness, I feel my body convulsing in a final struggle for air. And then, everything goes black.
But before I pass out completely, I feel a strange sensation in my body. It is a mixture of fear, shame and embarrassment. It takes me a moment to realize that I am fully erect, despite the fear and pain I am facing. I cannot believe it, how can my body betray me at a time like this?
But then I remember that I am just a boy, a virgin, and my body has a mind of its own. And in that last moment of my life, I feel ashamed but I also feel a sense of pride in my body, that it can still respond in such a terrifying and painful situation.
And just as I am feeling an overwhelming amount of emotions, my body finally gives in and I breathe my last breath, joining my best friend and my father in death.
As I take my last breath, I know that I will never see my mother again, or my friends. I will never get to experience all the joys and wonders of the world. But in that moment, I choose to let go of all my fears and pain, and embrace the peace that comes with death.
And I hope that my father and brother will also find peace in the end, knowing that we are together, even in death.
