Casey’s husband held her hand as she lay on the exam table, both of them watching the live image of her ultrasound on the monitor.

By law males couldn’t be snuffed, so they needed to know the sex of their baby before they could decide if she would serve as the main course at their Memorial Day barbecue in two weeks.

“Hmm,” the Doctor finally said. “Definitely a little girl.”

Her husband squeezed her hand excitedly.

“She looks delicious,” he muttered warmly in her ear as they both continued to stare at the sight of their now never to be born daughter.

Casey smiled to herself. “Just like her mother?” she whispered back.

“Hmm,” her husband hummed affectionately before kissing her cheek.
