Prologue
Havenbrook Academy for Girls is a prestigious elementary school hosting grades 1 - 6. Its primary goal is to “Educate and prepare the young of our Community to be the best contributors they can be.” It’s a great moto, slogan or even goal on the surface, and in truth they were very good at moving the best contributors onto more advanced learning.
Of course it helps to know how that is defined, you see, Havenbrook Academy for Girls is a part of the Federal System of schools and the primary schools, Elementary and Junior High especially, were generally where a girl’s best contribution is determined. You see, there are three paths that girls can follow in the school system. There were a few other paths outside it, but that’s not the point here.
They are Academic Achiever, Entertainment Contributor, or Non Contributor. You see, given the World’s over population and high birthrates, population control was something that had to be handled with care or the world, or even the Community, would be overrun and all would perish. So to combat this problem the decision was made, long ago, to have each child’s potential weighed and those with the most potential were allowed to graduate and contribute their minds to the Community.
After much argument and even some trial runs, it was determined that a young mind wouldn’t be truly capable of showing potential until the third grade. The child needed to learn how to show their potential, how to display themselves in the earlier years that it wasn’t feasible to begin the selection process before the Third Grade.
This brings us back to those paths which a child could find themselves on. The Academic Achiever was one that proved that they were good with their minds and could learn and show what they’d learned. They would, hopefully, go on to get higher education and provide some level of significant contribution to the Community. The Entertainment Contributor was one that provided entertainment in various forms. These weren’t as good in academics but could provide some level of entertainment for the community. We’ll come back to this group in just a bit. The final group are the Non Contributors. These were those individuals that didn’t do so well Academically, were trouble makers or who didn’t display any real entertainment potential. These individuals were snuffed for the betterment of the Community, to keep the resources needed for those that would contribute. The Federal System of schools handled this selection.
Why is this necessary? Well some time ago, centuries now, a virus infected the world that changed humanity on a fundamental level. The primary affect was fertility and birth rates went through the roof. So much so that virtually no Birth control was effective. Once a girl reached 16, if she had sex she was virtually guaranteed to get pregnant. The only real benefit from that was that under 16, even if the girl had gone through puberty she wouldn’t start to become truly fertile.
The secondary affect was that sexual need and desire rose exponentially. The combination was devastating to the population. No birth control and almost guaranteed pregnancy made birth rates sore on a scale never seen prior to the virus and the world had to scramble to find a solution. After many years in crisis, the WHO finally managed to institute, well require nations to institute, a population control policy.
So, we come back to the Entertainment Path. Sexuality, desire and need wasn’t something that was limited to adults. Girls as young as 6 or 7 would start to feel the arousal and desire. Over the course of years it became common place, expected and normal behavior. Sex Ed was taught early and home and family life became more open. As part of this, girls were taught from a young age that they could be a benefit to the community by providing pleasure, or as the Federal System termed it, Entertainment to the community. Of course, there is a limit to entertainment and most on the path of Entertainment could expect to be terminated before they graduated.
So this is the System that Havenbrook is under. Their goal is to weed out Non Contributors and push Academic Achievers as far as they could go. Life at home, at school and everywhere they went, girls were encouraged to show their potential as best they could. It seemed most of the girls in Havenbrook, and The Community, not only accepted this but embraced it at least on some level.
Richard “Rich” Sanders has been a third grade teacher at Havenbrook Academy for Girls for more than 10 years now and he’s proven to be great at preparing his students for the paths ahead of them. His students all seem to love him, even if he does seem to terminate more of them than other teachers of the third grade. Let’s follow some encounters in his class as his students fall into the three Paths that they have in front of them.
