Chapter 3 (Continued): Mia's Melting Point

As Mia began her descent down the treacherous slope of bear traps, she could feel her chocolate body protesting with every move. The damage she had sustained during the climb was taking its toll, and a strange wooziness began to cloud her thoughts.

"Just one foot in front of the other," she muttered, her voice slurring slightly. "Or what's left of my feet, anyway."

Her vision swam as she navigated the sharp metal teeth of the traps. The liquid chocolate that served as her blood was seeping from countless wounds, leaving a trail of sweet droplets behind her. With each step, Mia felt a little more light-headed.

Halfway down the mountain, disaster struck. As she stretched to reach the next safe spot, her weakened leg finally gave out. Mia tumbled forward, her chocolate body smashing against the unforgiving metal of the traps. She came to a stop a few yards down, dazed and even more damaged than before.

As she lay there, trying to gather her wits, Mia became acutely aware of an uncomfortable sensation in her midsection. Looking down, she saw that her licorice intestines had come loose from the impact and were now tangled in the teeth of a nearby trap.

"Oh, for the love of... Really?" she groaned, tugging feebly at the licorice strands. They refused to budge, stretching like rubber bands with each pull.

In her chocolate-deprived delirium, a thought occurred to Mia that would have seemed insane just moments ago. "These stupid things are just slowing me down," she reasoned, her cognitive functions clearly impaired. "I don't really need them, right? I mean, I'm made of chocolate!"

With a determination born of desperation and dwindling sanity, Mia grasped her intestines and began to pull. The licorice strands stretched and strained, and for a moment, it seemed they wouldn't give. Then, with a sound like snapping rubber bands, they tore free.

"Ha! Take that, unnecessary organs!" Mia crowed triumphantly, waving the licorice strands like a gruesome trophy. Her victory was short-lived, however, as she quickly realized the consequences of her actions.

Liquid chocolate began to pour from the gaping hole where her intestines had been, flowing much faster than any of her previous injuries. Mia's eyes widened in panic as she felt her strength ebbing away with each drop of chocolatey blood.

"Okay, maybe that wasn't my best idea," she admitted, her voice weak and quavering. "But I'm so close... I can't give up now."

With the last reserves of her strength, Mia pushed herself to her feet. She stumbled down the slope, leaving a trail of chocolate smears and licorice bits in her wake. Her vision narrowed to a tunnel, focused solely on the base of the mountain that seemed both tantalizingly close and impossibly far.

"For the Art Club," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "For... art..."

Mia made it another dozen yards before her legs finally gave out. She collapsed onto a mercifully trap-free patch of ground, her chocolate body splashing slightly on impact. As her consciousness faded, she had one last, oddly coherent thought:

"Well, at least I'll make a pretty abstract sculpture when I solidify."

With that, Mia's chocolate eyes fluttered closed, and she lay still, just yards from the bottom of the mountain. Her form, riddled with holes and missing several key pieces, was a testament to her determination and questionable decision-making skills.

As the medical team rushed to collect what was left of Mia, Principal Thornberry's voice echoed across the field:

"And that, students, is why we have a strict 'No Disemboweling' policy in our regular sports programs."

The remaining competitors, watching from various points on the mountain, gulped nervously and proceeded with much more caution. The Sweet Victory Challenge was proving to be more challenging – and messier – than anyone had anticipated.
