Day 2 (continued)

I lead her back toward the holding area of the dungeon. The other girls scramble away from the glass as we approach, creating a nervous, respectful space, as if the violence is contagious and might spill across the floor after us. Harper meets each of their eyes briefly before focusing on the bloodstained floor.

Aria presses herself against the far wall as we enter, her arms crossed over her small breasts. The other girls form a loose semicircle, their expressions vary – curiosity, dread, disbelief, the faintest spark of relief that it wasn’t them.

The heavy door slides shut behind us with a pneumatic hiss, sealing the horror of the machine room. The sudden silence leaves Harper's ragged breathing echoing through the dungeon. She wipes her cheek again, smearing more blood across her skin.

"Go take a shower," I tell her quietly, signaling the cleaning crew through the intercom.

Harper flinches at the sound of my voice, as if it breaks whatever fragile shell she’s wrapped herself in. She nods, eyes fixed on the floor, and walks stiffly toward the shower stall – a single barely enclosed space with no curtain, no privacy – just like everything else in this place. Her body is streaked with sweat and Sofia’s blood, dark veins of it drying along her arms and hips.

Behind me, the other girls remain silent. No whispers. No sobbing. Just the heavy stillness of people trying to make themselves invisible.

The cleaning crew – three men in full hazmat suits – move into the machine room with brisk efficiency. Through the open inner door, I hear the whine of pressure washers as they flood the guillotine platform, pink runoff splashing across the drain. One of the men lifts Sofia’s head into a biohazard container with practiced, emotionless hands.

Aria maintains her position against the wall, her face twisted with what might be disgust or pity as she watches Harper enter the shower. Mia fidgets with her collarbone, her fingers dancing across her pale skin. Lian keeps glancing toward the shower, then looking away quickly. Only Harper's soft sobbing breaks the silence now, the sound of water covering her tears.

The five remaining women study me in turns, gauging my reaction, searching for... what? Reassurance? Judgment?

They all notice my scrutiny and straighten slightly. Harper's crying has become a steady stream now, mingling with the shower water. With the shower stall offering no privacy, I can see her shaking hands as she washes Sofia's blood from her body. Her skin appears sallow under the harsh lights.

The remaining women shift uneasily as I hesitate. Mia wraps her arms around herself, her fingers digging into her biceps. Lian's foot taps rapidly against the soft floor, the sound echoing in the vast space. Juliette and Isla sit pressed together in a corner, hands clasped, whispering only to each other. Neither has spoken aloud since Sofia’s execution. Aria finally meets my gaze, her face a mask of controlled defiance. Her voice cuts through the silence, quivering with barely restrained emotion.

"So that's how it works?" She speaks with a hoarse edge. "One of us gets to go free, but the price..."

She glances at the shower where Harper's silhouette moves mechanically under the water.

"...the price is the rest of us having to kill each other."

"Those are the rules." I say, my voice devoid of emotion.

Aria's jaw tightens as she absorbs my words. She looks away for a moment, then back, her blue eyes burning with restrained fury.

"Fuck the rules," she mutters, her accent thickening. "These aren't rules, this is... some fucking rich cunt’s snuff fantasy. Only with other rich cunts watching."

The other girls tense, shifting their weight, their collective breathing noticeably quickened. Mia's fingers dig deeper into her arms, while Lian's foot taps harder against the floor. Harper's sobs have softened to quiet whimpers now, almost inaudible over the shower.

"You are correct, Aria. You don’t even realize how true this is.” I look down at the floor, my shoulders hunched. “And I really wish things were different."

Aria flinches slightly at my confession, her fingers curling into fists. A bitter laugh escapes her.

"Oh, do you? Does it fucking kill you inside to do this to us? Or is it just a job? Do you get a bonus for making it look... passionate?"

She speaks with a quaver as she gestures toward the machine room.

The other girls watch the exchange intently, their faces revealing a mix of hope and fear. Harper emerges from the shower, her skin pale and scrubbed raw, her hair clinging damply to her neck. She moves to stand beside Lian, who immediately puts an arm around her shoulders.

"Kill me inside? I guess that one way of putting it.” I am impressed at how precise Aria’s words are at describing my feelings. “It's a job, but I don't love it."

Aria's face shifts subtly, something like surprise flickering across it. She studies my face for a long moment before speaking.

"You're telling me you actually feel guilty about this? That this isn't just another depraved thrill for you?"

There's a new edge to her question now – not quite hope, but a probing need to understand.

Mia takes a tentative step forward, breaking the silent pattern of the others.

"You don't... you don't enjoy this? You don't want to hurt us?" Her voice wavers with an undercurrent of fear, but there's a searching quality to it as well.

Harper remains silent, her body tense as she clings to Lian's arm.

"I don't.” I look at each of the girls in turn, their eyes full of fear mixed with hope when they meet mine. “And when one of you dies tomorrow, I will do my best to ease your pain."

A tense quiet fills the room as the girls process my words. Aria maintains her position, but her shoulders drop slightly from their defensive hunch. Harper bites her lip, a single tear tracing down her cheek as she glances toward the guillotine through the glass.

Aria exhales sharply through her nose, crossing her arms as she studies me. Her usual defiance flickers uncertainly across her face, her blue eyes searching mine for any sign of deception.

"So you're saying you'll... what? Fuck us before we die, then make it quick?"

She speaks more softly than before, though still edged with bitterness.

I nod slowly.

"Sex with you is a clause in my contract, believe it or not.” I say, the words tasting like metal. “I wish it wasn’t. But when the time comes, I'll make it as... as gentle as possible. And I'll be with you when you go through the execution." I gesture toward the guillotine. "Sofia didn't feel a thing."

Aria's face crumples slightly at my admission, her eyes dropping to the floor.

"Fuck," she mutters, running a hand through her blonde hair. "That's... that's actually worse, you know. You're just some guy trying to do right by us, and I'm calling you a monster." She laughs, but it's hollow, broken.

Harper breaks away from Lian's grip, her voice cracking as she addresses me directly.

"Why? Why would you do this? If you don't want to hurt us, then why are you here at all?" Her blue eyes blaze with a desperate need to understand, her body shaking with suppressed emotion.

The question hangs heavy in the air as the other girls wait for my answer. Aria shifts her weight, her arms still crossed, but her stance has lost some of its aggressive tension. Mia bites her lip, her fingers nervously twisting together as she watches me. The reality of their situation settles over them – even a man who doesn't enjoy their suffering is still complicit in their deaths.

"I am a prisoner here too. A privileged one, but still a prisoner.” I frown. “And this is my cross to bear."

Lian's almond-shaped eyes grow large with disbelief.

"You're... you're being forced to do this?" Her voice rises almost to a squeak before she composes herself, but her fingers clutch at her black hair, pulling at the strands. "But you're the host! You have... you have all the power!"

Harper steps closer, her blonde-pink hair swaying as she shakes her head.

"No, that can't be true. If you were a prisoner, you would've tried to stop this by now. You would do something!"

My laugh is short and bitter. “Like what? Release you? Only for all of us to be killed by someone else?"

The dungeon falls silent except for the distant drip of water from somewhere behind the walls. Harper's inquisitive look wavers first as my words sink in. She looks at me with fresh eyes – searching, confused, trying to reconcile the man before her with the monster they've constructed in their minds.

Aria opens her mouth, then closes it again. The fight drains from her posture as she realizes the cold truth of my statement. She turns away, leaning against the wall, her fingers splayed against the cold surface.

"Fuck," she mutters under her breath. "Fuck this whole show."

Lian moves nearer to you, her small frame almost vibrating with unspoken questions.

"If you're really a prisoner, then... what happens if we don't play the game? If we just... refuse to kill each other?"

My throat tightens as I consider the genuine hope in her expression. I've rehearsed this answer a hundred times in my head, but saying it aloud still feels like a betrayal.

"I'll force you." My words come out strained. "And if I don't, they'll bring in men to do what I won't. Or they'll find some other way." I gesture around the sterile room. "You think this place runs on goodwill? There are backups for every contingency."

The color drains from Lian's face as she processes my words. She wraps her arms around herself, her fingers digging into her biceps.

"So... we're either killed by each other, or killed by strangers." Her voice breaks on the last word, her dark eyes glistening.

Harper steps forward, her blue gaze burning with something new – desperate curiosity.

"Who are they? The people who run this place?" She speaks with more volume than before, her hands clenching into fists at her sides. "There must be a reason they chose you. What do you know about them?"

Aria straightens from her position against the wall, turning to face me fully.

"These are very powerful men. The kind that actually run the world. As for the reason they chose me…” I gather all my courage to say this. “I... came up with the idea. I wrote a story. A fucking story – and they decided to make it a reality."

Harper's face contorts with disgust as she absorbs my words. Her lips part in shock, then twist into something between rage and revulsion.

"You wrote this?" She steps closer, her voice rising to a near-scream. "You sat there and fantasized about this? About girls being tortured and killed for entertainment?"

Aria's hands ball into fists at her sides, her usually expressive face hardening into a mask of pure contempt.

"You sick fuck," she hisses, her Dutch accent cutting the air. "You didn't just enable this. You created it." The accusation hangs between us like a blade.

Lian moves backward until she hits the wall, her eyes wide with terror.

"My name is John Doe and I'm a sick fuck.” My words leak out soaked with irony and self-disgust. “Satisfied? I did fantasize about this, but I never intended this to become reality."

Aria laughs — a bitter, hollow sound that echoes unnaturally in the sterile dungeon.

"Oh, that's rich. You want sympathy now? You wrote a story where women get butchered for your… whatever the hell gets you off, and when it comes to life, you act like you're the victim?"

She stalks toward me, her movements tight with contained fury.

Harper watches Aria with something like admiration flickering across her face. She steps closer to me, her blue eyes searching mine with unsettling intensity.

"Why? Why the fuck would you write something like this? Was it just... masturbation material?"

The bluntness hits harder than any slap.

"Pretty much.” I feel like I’m confessing my sins to a therapist. “A forbidden fantasy that stays harmless as long as it’s just that – a fantasy."

Harper's face darkens as she processes my words. She moves so close I can see the flecks of darker blue in her irises.

"So we're just characters in your little story? Your wet dream made flesh?" Her voice drops to a whisper that somehow carries more weight than shouting.

Shudder runs through my spine. I feel like this conversation, my attempt at connection is collapsing. Every sentence digs the pit deeper.

Aria steps beside Harper, arms crossed. The muscles in her jaw work as she clenches her teeth.

"That's why you fuck them right before they die. Your 'special privilege.' You didn't think that was fucked up when you wrote it?" She spits the last part with venom.

Lian speaks up, quieter than the others but no less intense.

"The machines…" Her words fade to a breath. She stares at the transparent wall, the killing devices beyond. "You... you came up with all those ways to die. You wrote our deaths."

My silence fills the room with more weight than any words could carry. The other girls stare at me, their faces shifting from shock to horror to disgust.

I look at the floor, my throat tightening so much that the words come out rasp and barely audible.

"I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. I wish I never wrote it. If only I would have known..."

Mia's voice breaks the silence, small and fragile.

"If only you'd known what? That your fantasy would become reality? That real women would die because of your story?"

Her hands shake as she speaks, her dark eyes glistening with unshed tears.

Aria moves in again, close enough that I can feel the heat of her breath.

"You can't take it back now. You can't unwrite it." She gestures vaguely toward the machine room. "That's your creation out there. Those are your words bringing real girls real pain and death."

I just stand there, broken. My attempt at understanding has failed – the situation is unsalvageable. Not after this confession.

"I know," I turn toward the exit. There's nothing left in me to offer.

Aria's hand shoots out, gripping my wrist with surprising strength.

"Oh no you don't. You don’t get to drop that bomb and walk away." Her fingers tighten painfully. "You're going to stand here and face what you've done."

Mia moves to block the exit, her face pale but determined.

"She's right. You've been treating us like... like we're just side characters in your story. But we're people. Real people." She speaks more steadily. "You can't just... leave when the plot gets too complicated."

I stop. Slowly, the weight of all six pairs of eyes settle on me. I feel them before I look at them – like heat pressing into my skin.

“What do you want from me?” I ask, my voice low, steady, but exhausted. “Tell me. Whatever it is… just do it.”

None of the girls move. The air feels brittle. I inhale slowly, then raise my hands a little – not defensively, but in surrender.

“If you want to scream at me,” I say, my voice low and uneven, “scream. If you want to blame me, do it. If you want to hit me… then hit me.” I swallow hard. “I’m not going to stop you.”

A stunned, disoriented silence washes through them. As if the script they rehearsed in their heads has suddenly vanished. They cornered a monster. They expected teeth. Instead they found a man already half-kneeling without being asked, and they have no idea what to do with that.

Lian moves first.

She drifts toward me with a slow, tentative step, her eyes unfocused as though she isn’t entirely aware she’s doing it. When she stops in front of me, she lifts her hand – not fast, not dramatic, just a trembling, instinctive motion. Her fingers hover inches from my cheek, the shape of a slap forming in her posture. I don’t flinch, don’t raise my arms in defense.

Lian freezes. Her breath hitches. Her hand hangs there a moment longer… then falters, slowly folding back toward her chest. She steps away as if the ground beneath her has turned unstable.
Aria’s grip falters. She wasn’t prepared for this. None of them were.

“What? You’re not even going to defend yourself?” she asks, her voice cracking on the last word. “Call security?”

I meet her eyes. They’re wide, fierce, searching for something to push against – anger, arrogance, indifference. Something solid. All she sees instead is a man collapsing in on himself.

“Why would I?” I whisper. “I deserve all of it.”

Aria stumbles back a step. Not afraid – overwhelmed.

“God,” she mutters, shaking her head. “You’re so pathetic.”
She spits the word like it hurts her more than me. Like she’s furious that she finally has a moment of power and can’t bring herself to use it. Like she grabbed a sword only to discover the blade was too heavy to lift.

The room settles into a tense, pulsing stillness. Nobody steps forward, nobody speaks. I stay where I am, hands lowered now, eyes on the floor. The anger dissolves into confusion – then into something none of them want. A flicker of pity. A flash of horror. A slow realization that the monster they cornered is just a man who hates himself more than they ever could.

Harper watches me with an expression I can't quite read – something between revulsion and curiosity. The silence stretches.

"How much of this is actually true?"

"How much of what?" My throat tightens.

"Your being trapped here. Your not wanting to be part of this." Harper steps closer, studying my face intently. "You hesitated when you said it. Like you weren't sure how much to reveal."

"All of it.” I meet her eyes. “But does it matter? Tomorrow one of you dies again."

Harper's breath catches audibly. The color drains from her face as she retreats, stumbling slightly. The other girls seem to recoil as one, creating a loose circle around me, their expressions caught between dread and something more complex – something almost like pity.

"That's what you were getting at before, wasn't it?" Harper speaks softly now, the sharp edge gone from her words. "You wanted to be gentle, make things more bearable. But all of that was not to comfort us, was it? It was so you didn’t feel like a villain, so you wouldn’t hate yourself for what you have become."

She stares at me with dawning understanding.

Aria exhales shakily. “Shit. He’s trying to help us in the only way he actually can.”

A small, tired smile tugs at my mouth. “As if that makes me less of a monster.”

"Less of a monster? Maybe." Aria’s voice is quiet now, stripped of heat. "But you're still a monster, just one with slightly more... I don't know, nuance than we gave you credit for."

The atmosphere changes. The air in the room feels heavier, pressing against all of them. Aria's shoulders drop slightly, some of her fury deflating into resignation. The dungeon falls into a heavy silence, thick and suffocating. No one wants to speak. No one knows what to say.

“I will be back tomorrow.” I exhale and get up on my feet.

The girls remain motionless as I walk to the exit. The heavy door groans open; the hiss of hydraulics fills the room. Their eyes burn holes into my back, but I don’t turn around.

When the door seals shut behind me, the corridor seems too bright. Too quiet. The sterile air stings my lungs. I press two fingers against the bridge of my nose, fighting off the headache swelling behind my eyes. The shame hits in waves – hot, nauseating, suffocating. I had wanted… what? Redemption?
Some pathetic, fragile relief? A moment of human connection?

Instead I got exactly what any monster would get if he stood in front of the people he’d destroyed and asked to be understood. Their faces keep flashing in my mind – Aria’s disgust, Mia’s trembling anger, Lian’s horror. Harper’s eyes searching mine like she was dissecting me. It felt like having my skin peeled back.

I press my hand against the wall, breathing hard. Embarrassment burns under my skin. Terror too – not of them, but of what I am. What I did. What I wrote. There’s no redemption. Just the mirror they held up, and the thing staring back at me.

I make my way into the observation room and settle into the surveillance chair, watching the feeds on multiple monitors. Aria paces methodically in front of the sleeping area, her bare feet leaving faint prints on the soft floor. Harper has positioned herself near the far wall, her legs drawn up against her chest as she rocks gently. Lian sits cross-legged, her dark eyes tracking the movements of the other girls. Mia clutches a thin blanket around her shoulders, her gaze fixed on the sealed door as if willing it to open. Isla and Juliette whisper in a corner, their words too soft for the microphones to catch. The hours pass in this tense stasis.

The day creeps forward like molasses as I watch the girls move through their routine of unending dread – dread of which I am the jailer, the executioner, the author…

Harper eventually curls into a fetal position and falls asleep against the wall. Lian lies back and stares at the ceiling, while Aria never stops moving. And I watch. Because that’s all I can do.
