The magician flipped the coin in his hand and caught it in midair.
He flashed a grin at his assistant. “Alright, Alicia, time to put on a show.”
The young woman shivered briefly, but responded appropriately. “Yes, master.”
The magician strode out onto the stage, followed by his voluptuous assistant, and the lights blazed on, revealing to the crowd the smartly dressed man in a suit and cape, and the woman in the shimmering, flowing gown.
After a few words of introduction, the magician began the act with something flashy. He and his assistant worked together to carry an apparently heavy statue to center stage, then with a snap of his fingers, the entire statue burst into billowing flames and disappeared as a wisp of smoke. The act continued with a few simple illusions, like pulling a lit candle out of a handkerchief, or tearing up a sheet of paper, then restoring it to be undamaged with a flourish of his hand.
After twenty minutes of such mystifying, but ordinary spectacles, they arrived at the highlight of the performance, advertised so prominently in the flyers.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” called out the magician, “thank you for indulging me as I demonstrate my craft for your entertainment. All of the tricks you have seen so far are just that: tricks. And, no doubt, a number of you in attendance may even be familiar with how these illusions are achieved.” His expression became grave. “However, what you are about to witness is no trick, no illusion, but indeed, this is true magic, the likes of which are known only to a few ancient shamans in the remote bush regions of Australia, and to my humble self. It was only with great effort and undergoing many terrible trials that I managed to gain the trust of those reclusive mystics, earning myself the privilege of the knowledge and the tools for this single unnatural ability.”
While he had been hyping up the crowd, the lovely assistant had wheeled out a table and a large, ornate wooden box into center stage. The magician pulled a ball-gag out from behind the table and inserted it into the nervous assistant’s mouth.
“I must warn you,” continued the magician, in a serious tone, “although I have performed this rite many times, what you are about to see is by no means safe. Nor is it pleasant for anyone involved. I have had several audience members become ill, and many with weak constitutions have fainted at the sight. Anyone not mentally prepared to see this woman die a gruesome death should leave now; and any parents accompanying young children should escort them out to the lobby.”
The magician was silent as he strapped his trembling assistant to the table by her arms and legs, then he took her long blonde hair and secured it in a clamp on the end of the table. Once she was thoroughly immobilized, he turned a large crank on the side of the table, causing it to pivot, partially bringing the woman upright, so the audience could clearly see her.
“Naturally, I cannot disclose all the secrets of the dark arts which you are about to witness, however, I will reveal a few details, just to dissuade any from attempting to reproduce this dangerous feat.”
The magician reached one hand up the skirt of his assistant’s dress. Then, being certain to flip the hidden switch to turn on the tiny light, he pulled out an angular, glowing green crystal, a little smaller than a golf ball. As he held it aloft for the crowd to see, the light pulsed gently, with the rhythm of a heartbeat.
“This magical gemstone is only one of a few in the whole world. As you can see, after spending an undisclosed length of time–
intimately
close to her, it has absorbed a portion of my lovely assistant’s essential life force, and now holds it in reserve, outside her body. I need not tell you that this magic cannot be performed without such a unique and powerful item suitably infused with the appropriate magical energy.”
The magician intoned a line of an arcane sounding incantation, not quite loud enough for the audience to make out the words. After a few mystical gestures, he pressed the green quartz to the woman’s body in five places, tracing a line across each thigh, each shoulder, and finally her neck. Carrying it reverently, he brought the glowing stone over to the coffin-like wooden box, and fitted the crystal in a socket on the front of the box, surrounded by tribal symbols and runes.
He pulled a small electric chainsaw out from behind the table and held it up, revving the motor a few times to demonstrate that it was functional.
“I would ask that you all remain silent for this next part, as it requires a great deal of concentration on my part to avoid a disastrous error.”
With a look of intense focus, the magician activated the chainsaw and slowly brought it down on his assistant’s left thigh. As soon as it made contact, her glittering dress snagged in the barbs and was pulled into the mechanism, causing the motor to stutter and stall.
“Oh, dear!” cried the magician, momentarily seeming to lose his composure. Right away, he collected himself and waved calmingly to the audience. “Not to fear, folks–this is only a minor inconvenience and should not interfere with the dark magic essential to tonight’s ritual.”
With a sharp jerk, the magician pulled on the chainsaw, causing the dress to rip along the pre-weakened seams and come entirely free from the woman. After setting down to one side the chainsaw, and the dress it was entangled with, he pulled a second chainsaw from behind the table.
The abruptly naked woman strapped to the table whimpered around her gag, and a few whispers echoed in the performance hall, so the magician spoke again. “Please, ladies and gentlemen, I must implore you to keep quiet. I apologize for any unpleasantness, but we are now at the most delicate part of this ritual.”
Once the crowd had returned to silence, he started the chainsaw. With a smooth movement, the magician severed the assistant’s left leg, spraying a narrow line of blood across the stage. The woman’s scream, although muted by the gag, was easily heard by all as her leg slumped to the side and she shook with agony. Moving to the other side of the table, the magician did not hesitate to swiftly remove her right leg the very same way.
The magician paused for a moment, waiting for the agitated crowd to react to the gory spectacle. He took this opportunity to look carefully into the seating area, gauging the attitude of some of those in attendance. After he waved for silence, the only sound to be heard before the chainsaw buzzed to life again was the muffled sobbing of the legless, naked woman strapped to the table.
The magician solemnly brought the spinning chain to bear on her right shoulder, then her left, cutting off both remaining limbs. The ruined woman quivered spastically, her head and torso now only held in place by the hair clamped to the top of the table. Blood poured freely from all of her wounds, painting the table red.
The magician placed the gory chainsaw behind the table, and instead pulled out a gleaming axe. He held it out, showing off the red and black symbols along the handle, then posed dramatically for a moment, with the weapon held high. Crying out a few strange words, the magician swung the axe down sharply, beheading the limbless body. With nothing connecting it to the table any longer, her lifeless torso slid down and fell to the floor.
The magician remained still for several heartbeats as the audience remained completely silent, mesmerized and horrified by what they had seen. Finally, he straightened up and pulled free the axe from where the blade had embedded into the table. He allowed the axe to clatter to the stage, then pulled a Barbie doll from under the table. He held it up for the audience, showing that the doll loosely resembled the assistant, wearing a miniature of the dress she had worn at the start of the show.
“The next step in this unholy ritual requires that I demonstrate to the magical energy just what actions we ask it to perform. In the remote land on the far side of the world, this was done using a doll made of wood, cloth, and the fur of a wild animal, however…” The magician smiled grimly. “Fortunately, the materials used in the effigy are not important in this case, and this ordinary doll will work. We begin by approximately repeating the damage the real woman has suffered.”
He grabbed one leg of the doll, as if to twist it off, then paused. With a quiet chuckle, he said, “I nearly overlooked something–small details matter a great deal when dealing with magic this powerful.”
He deftly removed the doll’s dress and caused it to vanish with a flick of his wrist. He then resumed pulling on the naked doll’s limbs, pulling them each off in the same order he had removed them from his assistant. Last of all, he pulled on the doll’s head. When it came off with a pop, he fumbled, dropping the head, causing it to bounce off the edge of the stage.
“Whoops. Pardon me and my little assistant here–we all lose our heads now and then,” he said, easing a bit of the tension in the air. “Ma’am, could you please fetch that for me? I believe my assistant is going to need it.”
He winked at the wide-eyed teen girl seated in the front row. She blushed at the attention, then quickly picked up the doll’s head and handed it up to the magician.
“Now that we have recreated the damage my poor assistant has endured, we will restore the effigy to wholeness, signifying to the magical energy what it should do.”
He then carefully snapped the head and all four limbs back in place on the doll. Walking over to the wooden box, he lifted the lid and placed the doll inside.
“This Australian sarcophagus is made from a particular type of wood, not currently documented in the annals of science, and shaped using a method even the shamans who entrusted it to me can no longer reproduce. This is another essential component in channeling this dark and powerful magic to do our bidding.”
Having returned to a more somber mood, the magician carefully carried each limb one at a time and placed it inside the box. Muttering some more exotic phrases, he carried her torso over and added it to the box, then last of all, he gently placed her head inside and sealed the lid. Holding his arms up dramatically, he shouted a few more magical words, then pressed his hand over the glowing crystal. Immediately, a wave of green light swept across the carvings on the box, then went out. When the magician pulled his hand away, the light in the crystal had gone out.
The crowd held their breath as he slowly lifted the lid. The still-gagged head of his assistant rose up from inside, staring blankly out at the crowd. Everything was still for a moment, no one daring to move.
Then, the magician called out, “Arise!”
He grasped the head of his tear-stained assistant by the hair, pulling her upwards. On unsteady limbs, the naked woman climbed out of the box, then self-consciously tried to cover her body with her hands. Aside from a few drops of blood on her body, she appeared to be entirely unharmed.
The crowd went wild with applause. The magician bowed repeatedly, then nudged his naked assistant, reminding her to bow as well.
After the crowd had started to calm down, the magician appeared to notice that his assistant had returned to the living world naked, then sheepishly pulled the doll’s dress from his pocket. He offered the woman his cape, then they bowed once more to the sound of scattered laughter and some more clapping.
After the curtain fell, the magician directed his assistant to collect the scattered items on the floor, while he pushed the wooden box back stage. Once they were well away from the crowd, he unfastened her gag and retrieved his cape from her.
She took in a deep breath of air, but made no effort to hide her nudity from him. “Thank you, master. I couldn’t hear much from inside the box, but that sounded awful. Can I please see her, master?”
The magician sighed and lifted the lid on the wooden box. After pressing the mechanism to expose the other half of the trick box, he allowed the woman to look inside. She stared for a moment, then shivered. With a fresh tear rolling down her cheek, she turned to the magician and put on a brave smile.
“Well, master, with my sister…” she gestured slightly at the box, “at least I get you all to myself tonight, right?”
The magician did not immediately return the smile. “Recite the magician’s assistant’s oath,” he commanded.
She trembled at his stern tone, but said, “I swear on pain of death to never reveal the secrets of my master’s magic.”
She relaxed when he finally smiled. He cupped one finger under her chin.
“Well done, Alice. I know you won’t break your oath,” he said softly before kissing her.
She moaned and leaned into the kiss, not noticing when he placed his left hand on the back of her head. When he ended the kiss, he abruptly set his right palm against her chin and twisted, snapping her neck. Her body spasmed once before crumpling to the floor. She blinked once or twice before her expression froze forever in a look of utter astonishment and confusion.
With a weary sigh, the magician hefted her lifeless body into the empty half of the box before closing the lid and turning the hidden locking mechanism.
With the secret of his trick once again safely stored only in his own mind, the magician strode confidently out of the theater to seek out the twins his keen eyes had spotted in the crowd.
After all, he was going to need a new pair of lovely assistants, so he could amaze the people of the next town on his tour.
