Although the freshly spitted girl was, according to her own expressed wish earlier, likely to put on quite a show for some time to come, with the main attraction over, people either started to wander off or join the queue to buy some food. Josh and the girls were in the latter group and watched hungrily as the two young men got to work stripping the first girl’s carcass while two other girls around the same age as the roasters, cheerfully served the public.

“Three rolls, please.” Josh requested with a smile as they reached the front of the line and were greeted by a rather busty uniformed teen with straight, ask-blonde hair cut into a short bob. As he placed the order, Josh found himself wondering whether this girl and the other who stood further down the counter serving her own customers would be going home after the fair or whether they too had a date with the spit. It did not seem polite to ask.

“Certainly, sir!” she smiled. “And which pig would you like the meat from?”

“That one!” Samantha pointed enthusiastically at the table in the middle where the young men were doing their best to collect all the usable meat from the carcass. “The girl!”

“Is that for all three?” the teen asked and Josh confirmed that it was.

“Tell me,” he smiled, trying to sound casual as she typed the total into a card machine. “does anyone go for the actual pig? Feels like a bit of a wasted opportunity.”

“Some people can be sol old-fashioned,” she told him with a sigh as he held his card against the reader and they both waited for the beep, “most people do want to try the girl-meat, even if only for the novelty, to be able to say they’ve tried it, but other people tut and look disapproving!”

“Oh no!” Josh frowned. “Not had any angry shouting or people having a go at you I hope?”

“Not here.” the girl rolled her eyes. “We were at an event in the Summer and one woman stood and lectured us for twenty minutes about how immoral it was to be selling human flesh, as she put it!” The girl make air-quotes with her fingers as she said the words “human flesh” the way Laura often did, making Josh smile.

“Oh wow!” he chucked, “So what did you say to her?”

“We told her she was free to buy from any of the two dozen or so other food stands at the festival!” she shrugged, tearing off the merchant copy of the receipt and pressing the button to print the customer copy. “Of course her point was slightly undermined when he daughter sauntered over to look for her wearing a promotional pink cowboy hat and happily munching on one of the burgers the Sidney’s recruitment stand was giving out…” She grinned and both girls burst out laughing. Josh chuckled lightly and shook his head in amusement. “That took the wind out of her sales a bit!” she grinned. “Okay, I’ll go get your rolls.”

They watched hungrily as she sifted through the cut meat on the platter clearly looking for choice pieces for them, an effort they really appreciated, while her former colleague turned piggy, dripping with oily sweat, frantically humped her spit to her left.

“Here you go!” she returned with three paper plates, on each of which was a large bread roll well-stuffed with thick slices of girl-meat. “Would you all like stuffing and apple sauce?” They all agreed and she added generous portions of both to each roll. “Well there you are!” she handed the plates out. “Help yourself to sauces, there’s napkins there too. Bon appetite and Merry Christmas!”
