As for the surrounding world, I usually don't include it in the stories for a few reasons, it can detract from the plot and usually can be quiet long unless you just dump exposition, and also I think its easy for the reader to add its own lore (I do it myself on the stories I read).

For example, I usually don't mention parents/family that much, but that can be explained because parents and children don't communicate much now, or if you think a parent should have noticed something their kid did, in reality they probably wouldn't.

I am not saying adding more detail to a story is wrong, I enjoy it, but I think in this kind of stories it can unnecessary.

PS: I am only writing short stories now, so that might have a lot to do with my point of view...
