Day 7 - Aftermath

The dungeon stretches before us in eerie silence. Normally, this space is alive with sound – sobs, whispers, the occasional outburst of fear or anger. Now, the emptiness feels suffocating. The sleeping mats, neatly made with rough linens, now eerily empty.

Juliette's fingers tremble slightly in mine as she absorbs the stillness. I guide her toward the door at the far end of the dungeon, the one leading outside.

Her breathing quickens as we reach the heavy security door.

"It is really unlocked?" She speaks in a hoarse whisper.

The biometric scanner glows green at my approach, releasing a soft beep before the door slides open.
The corridor beyond is sterile and cold, white fluorescent lights stretching into the distance. No guards await. Just me and Juliette in the echoing passage. I turn my head and look at her.

"Come on."

Juliette steps forward, her bare feet padding against the polished concrete as she follows me into the sterile corridor. The harsh overhead lights cast everything in an almost clinical glow – every shadow sharp and unforgiving. She glances back once at the sealed door, then again, her breathing still uneven.

The corridor extends ahead for what feels like miles, but the reality is only a few hundred feet of sterile white walls broken by occasional security cameras. The silence here is different from the dungeon – deeper, more absolute. No ventilation system hums, no distant machinery groans. Just the quiet shuffle of our feet and the occasional drip of a leak somewhere ahead.

"Let's go shower first.” I look at her, all covered in dark red smudges. β€œWash off blood."

Juliette's eyes flicker down to her own blood-smeared body, her fingers unsteady as she brushes at a dark streak on her thigh. The motion leaves only a faded mark, the blood already dry and clinging to her skin.

"Shower sounds good," she says, but she speaks with a catch in her words, as if each syllable costs her something.

Her shoulders slump slightly as she follows me down the corridor. I feel her presence, a silent shadow pressing against my back, like she's afraid to let even that small distance grow between us.

The door to my living quarters slides open with a soft hiss, revealing a starkly different world from the dungeon. Here, the walls are painted a muted gray instead of the dungeon's sterile white. The lights are warm and golden rather than harsh fluorescent. A plush area rug covers the floor, its deep navy color standing out against the otherwise austere decor.

Juliette steps inside hesitantly, her bare feet sinking into the soft fibers of the rug. She stares wide-eyed at the modern furnishings – the low-slung leather couch, the glass-topped coffee table stacked with scripts, the massive television mounted to the wall. It's a far cry from the cold concrete walls she's been trapped behind for days.

"They let you..."

Her words trail off as she takes in the sleek kitchenette, the high-end appliances, the framed paintings on the wall. Her fingers curl and uncurl at her sides, as if resisting the urge to touch everything.

"You look like you've never seen a normal house before," I observe, setting my keycard on the counter.

Juliette shakes her head, turning in a slow circle.

"Not since... not since the..."

She doesn't finish, her attention drawn to the windows overlooking the jungle. The setting sun paints the glass in rich oranges and purples, reflected in her wide blue eyes.

"This is..." she starts again, then swallows hard.

"It is normal," she finally manages, her voice small and rough. "So normal it's... it's weird."

She turns back to me, her face twisting as she struggles to process this sudden shift in reality. Her hands come up, shaking, to rub at her arms as if trying to convince herself she's still in the dungeon.

"And you are just... here. Living here. Like this never happened."

The accusation hangs between us, though she speaks without malice – just bewildered horror. I step closer, watching as she tenses but doesn't retreat. Up close, I can see the tiny flecks of darker blue in her irises, the way they dilate slightly at my proximity.

"You're right," I say quietly, close enough now that my body heat reaches her. "This isn't the dungeon."

My hand lifts slowly, giving her time to pull away if she wants. When she doesn't, my fingers brush the shell of her ear, tucking a strand of damp hair behind it.

"You want to go to the shower first? Or should we do it together?"

Juliette's breathing falters when I speak, her lips parting slightly as if she's considering her words carefully. The silence stretches between us for several heartbeats before she speaks.

"I don't know what I want anymore," she admits, her voice soft and raw.

Her fingers twist together anxiously, the tendons standing out starkly on her pale wrists.

"I thought... I thought I would die today. And now I am here, in this... in your home. And you are talking about showers like this is normal date."

Her gaze drops to the floor, her bare feet shifting nervously against the plush carpet.

"I don't know what is the right answer."

I gently take her hand and lead her to the bathroom. It feels enormous after the cramped confines of the dungeon. Juliette stands frozen just inside the door, staring at the glass-walled shower enclosure with its multiple spray heads and the deep tub large enough for two people. Her chest rises and falls rapidly as she absorbs the luxury of the space – towels hanging on heated racks, a marble countertop laden with expensive products, a mirror reflecting back her exhausted face.

"This is..." She chokes slightly. "This is ridiculous."

She looks at me with sudden defiance, tears glistening but not falling.

"Why do you get to live like this while we are down there? While I just..." Her hands gesture helplessly.

I frown.

β€œMy cage is gilded."

"You don't seem like you are in cage," she says quietly. Her hands hover near my shoulders, uncertain. "Not really. Not compared to..."

She can't bring herself to say their names. The ghost of Harper's scream still echoes in her mind.
I turn on the shower, adjusting the temperature with practiced ease.

"Get inside."

Juliette flinches at the command, her body tensing like a cornered animal. For a moment I think she might bolt, but she forces herself to step into the shower stall. The hot water hits her shoulders and she gasps, her head tilting back as rivulets run down her face and chest. When she looks at me again, there's something wild in her expression – not quite fear, but the keen awareness of being utterly exposed.

"This feels strange," she says, words nearly inaudible over the water.

Her hands move to her hair, rubbing at the matted blood and sweat there.

"Being clean like this. Being..." She swallows hard. "Being alive when I should not be."

Juliette's eyes track the movement of my hands as I strip off the bloodied shirt, her breathing hitching when my skin comes into view. I step into the shower beside her, steam rising around both of us. The heat of the water makes her shiver, droplets clinging to her collarbones and the tips of her small breasts.

"You're still shaking," I observe, reaching for the soap.

She doesn't pull away as my hands begin to work the lather across her shoulders and down her arms. Her skin is soft beneath my fingers, the contrast between the luxury of the shower and the brutality of the dungeon almost surreal.

The soap creates bubbles that flow over her breasts and down her stomach, disappearing into the water swirling around her feet. Juliette's breathing becomes more even as my hands move across her body, though she still trembles slightly. She watches me with wary eyes, her face upturned as water streams down from her hairline.

"The soap smells like... like flowers," she says softly, a note of confusion in her words.

Her body leans into my touch almost unconsciously, seeking comfort in something clean after days of smelling blood and disinfectant. My hands work over her back, fingers pressing into the tense muscles there, and she makes a small sound in her throat – something between a sigh and a whimper.

"You're taking care of me," she says quietly, her words almost lost beneath the shower's spray.

The observation lingers between us, loaded with unspoken things. Her fingers curl into my forearm as I reach for the shampoo, her grip loose but present. She doesn't pull away when my fingers massage the soap into her scalp, tilting her head back into the stream to rinse.

"This is how you make them feel safe," she murmurs, her words thick with unshed tears. "Before you hurt them." Her nails dig slightly into my skin when she adds, "Or kill them."

The water runs down her face, making it hard to tell if the dampness there is from tears or simply steam. Her words hang between us, heavy with accusation and something else – like curiosity. The way her fingers press into my arm betrays her conflicting feelings. Her heart beats against my wrist where my arm brushes her collarbone.

"You don't want to feel safe with me," I say, rinsing the soap from her hair with deliberate slowness.

The water turns the blonde strands a darker gold as it rinses away days of filth and blood. Juliette watches me through damp lashes, her lower lip caught between her teeth.

"No," she admits after a pause. "I don't. But I do. I feel… safe."

The realization crashes over Juliette like an ocean wave – her breath catches audibly and her fingers tighten around my arm hard enough to bruise. The shower's spray beats down on her shoulders as she sways slightly, her free hand coming up to press against the tiled wall for balance.

"I'm safe, showering here while they are all gone," she chokes out, her words cracking with emotion. "I survived. Harper..."

She speaks her dead friend's name and her composure shatters. Tears spill down her face and into the steam-filled air, mingling with the water from the showerhead. Her grip on my arm turns desperate as she leans into me, her forehead coming to rest against my sternum.

I pull her against my chest, feeling her shaking as sobs wrack her body. The water from the showerhead mingles with her tears, hot trails sliding down my back where her arms wrap around me. She buries her face in the crook of my neck, her breath coming in ragged gasps against my skin.

Her body presses against mine, all angles and sharpness – ribs jutting from her frame, the bones of her wrists delicate where they encircle my back. The water keeps falling, forming rivulets along the crease where my neck meets my shoulder. She's not just crying – she's shaking apart in my arms, each sob punching out of her with enough force to make her teeth click together.

"I kept thinking I would be the next one," she rasps against my skin, her words raw and thick with grief. "I would wake up and think it was my turn today. Now... now it's just me."

Her fingers dig into my shoulder blades, blunt nails scraping lightly over my skin. I hold her as the reality of her survival crushes down on her, her sobs growing quieter but no less intense. The water continues streaming over both of us. Steam fills the small space.

Her body remains tense against mine for a long time – like she's afraid that if she lets go, the world will dissolve around her. But gradually, the shaking subsides. Her grip on my shoulders shifts from claws to fingertips. The wet heat of her breath slows against my neck, her tears drying in the steam. She makes a small, wounded noise when I slide one hand up to cradle the back of her head, pressing her temple firmly against my collarbone. Her hair is wet from the water coming down, the strands curling slightly where they cling to her face. I turn the shower off.

The steam thickens as the water stops, leaving only the distant drip of the showerhead echoing in the suddenly quiet bathroom. I step out first, then reach back to help her – her hand small and shaking in mine. When she steps from the enclosure, I immediately wrap her in the towel, drawing it around her shoulders with deliberate care. She doesn't resist as I pat her hair dry, then move down to her neck, her arms, her back. Each movement is slow, methodical, like I’m coaxing something fragile back to life.

Juliette remains still as a statue, watching my face intently. The towel absorbs the water from her skin, leaving her flushed pink where it rubs against her.

I wrap the towel tighter around her and she finally moves – just a slight shift as she presses her forehead against my chest again. She breathes in slowly, the sound shaky but steadier now. Her fingers curl into the fabric of the towel where it's folded at her collarbone. Her lashes are damp from tears, her face pink from the shower's heat. I don't speak, just let her be there, tucked against me as if seeking shelter in my presence.

The cool air hits my skin the moment I step out, contrasting sharply with the steamy heat of the shower. I move with deliberate motions, toweling off my shoulders and arms, then lower down to my torso. Juliette watches me the whole time, her breathing still uneven but her fingers no longer clutching at the towel. When I drop the towel around my waist, she flinches slightly – not from fear, but from the sheer foreignness of this moment. The way I move. The way my body is uncovered while hers is still wrapped safely in the terrycloth.

She speaks at last, her voice hoarse.

"This is... strange."

Her attention darts between my face and the tile beneath my feet.

"That I'm naked while you're not? Yeah, looks like we switched places"

Juliette's lips part slightly at my words, her fingers tightening in the towel where it's tucked around her neck. She blinks rapidly, looking down at my bare torso before quickly averting her eyes. A faint color rises to her face, though whether it's embarrassment or something else entirely, I can't be sure. Her shoulders rise and fall as she draws a slow breath.

"That is... not what I meant," she murmurs.

But she doesn't correct what I actually meant. Instead, she shifts slightly, her weight moving from one foot to the other as if testing the ground beneath her. The towel clings to her thighs, still damp with condensation.

"I don't have any clothes that would fit you.” I shrug. β€œWant to wear one of my shirts?"

Juliette's fingers tighten around the towel, her knuckles paling slightly as she considers my offer. She bites her lower lip, glancing between my face and the exit of the bathroom. She exhales, long and slow.

"I... I don't really have much of a choice, do I?"

There's no bitterness in her tone, only quiet resignation. She pulls the towel tighter around herself as if it could shield her from the vulnerability of the situation.

"But yes. Please."

I hand her one of my shirts. It's so large it could as well be a dress for her. I smirk.

"You have been naked all the time in here and now you decide to be embarrassed?

Juliette takes the shirt from me, her fingers brushing against mine for the briefest moment before she pulls away. She examines the fabric, the way it dwarfs her small frame, and a hesitant smile flickers across her face. It's not amusement – more like an acknowledgment of the absurdity of the situation. The towel slips slightly as she accepts the shirt, revealing a glimpse of collarbone before she catches it and holds it tighter.

"I did not choose when to be naked," she says quietly, avoiding my gaze as she fumbles with the towel. She speaks softly but steadily. "And now that I have a choice, I guess I want... I don't know. A little dignity, maybe?"

I smile as I start putting my clothes on.

"Yeah, I understand."

The simple acknowledgment softens something in her expression. She watches me dress, her fingers still tangled in the towel, her shoulders less tense than before. When I finish, she hesitates for another moment before slowly unraveling the towel. She moves with careful deliberation, ensuring the shirt covers her as much as possible before letting the towel drop to the floor.

The fabric swallows her entire body, the hem reaching nearly to her knees. She rolls up the sleeves methodically, each fold precise and measured. When she's finished, she looks up at me, her hands smoothing imaginary wrinkles from the front of the shirt.

"Thank you," she says quietly.
