Day 7 - Aftermath (continued)
Soon the food arrives. The first bites of dessert – chocolate lava cake melting in her mouth, tiramisu dissolving on her tongue – draw a soft moan from Juliette's lips. She savors each mouthful like it's sacred, closing her eyes as the flavors register. Between bites, she talks about childhood memories – the taste of strawberry shortcake at her grandmother's house, the way her little brother would steal the whipped cream when she wasn't looking.
I match her storytelling with my own, recounting summer evenings by the pool with friends, the simple joy of making out with a girl in the backseat of a car. Normal, mundane things that feel like luxuries now.
Her fork trembles slightly as she stabs at the last piece of strawberry shortcake.
"This is... so good," she murmurs, her voice thick with emotion. "I did not think it would taste like this. I forgot." She forces a smile that doesn't quite reach her red-rimmed eyes. "Thank you for this. For... everything. Since you found me in that dungeon."
I reach across the table and take her hand again. It's warm now, her fear mostly burned away by sugar and memory.
"I'm glad I got to give you this. Before..."
I don't finish the sentence. I don't need to. Juliette's fingers tighten around mine.
The final bites of dessert linger on my tongue as we both sit in the aftermath of our meal, the dim candlelight flickering across Juliette's face, music softly playing in the background. She's still clutching my hand across the table, her thumb absently tracing slow circles against my skin.
"Dance with me," Juliette suddenly says, not quite meeting my eyes. "Just once. Before... before everything changes tomorrow."
She stands up, tying my black shirt around her like a small dress and holding out her free hand. A strand of her damp blonde hair falls across her face as she moves.
My heart hammers in my chest as I take her hand and rise from the chair.
The dining area is suddenly too small, the air thick with everything unsaid. Juliette guides me into the living room where space opens up, where the floor-to-ceiling windows let the moonlight spill in. She hesitates for just a moment before turning to face me, pressing her palm flat against my chest. I feel her pulse fluttering against my ribs, quick and uncertain.
"I don't remember how," she admits, her breath coming fast.
Her free hand finds my shoulder, fingers gripping lightly. I pull her close, resting my hand lightly on the curve of her waist.
"Just like this," I murmur, guiding her into a slow sway.
The rhythm of my movement mirrors the gentle rise and fall of her chest. Juliette's head rests against my shoulder as we move together, her hair brushing against my neck. The heat of her body feels alive against me, the steady thump of her heart echoing through my chest where she's pressed. Her breathing gradually slows, matching the rhythm of our steps, as if she's drawing strength from the simple contact.
"You dance well," she murmurs after several minutes, her voice almost lost in the music. "I didn't expect that from you."
Her fingers trace small circles on my back through my shirt, leaving faint tingles in their wake. The way she holds herself against me suggests someone who's found a rare moment of peace in the storm.
The music swells around us both, a slow ballad bleeding through the speakers like honey. Juliette's body moves with mine as if made to fit, her small hands sliding up my chest to rest behind my neck. She tilts her face up to meet my eyes, her bright blue gaze glistening in the moonlight filtering through the windows. The scent of vanilla from her hair mixes with the faint sweetness of chocolate and coffee on her breath.
I look down at her as she looks up at me, the moment stretching between us. Her pupils are wide, dark pools swallowing the blue irises, and her lips are slightly parted. Her breath catches when my thumb brushes the soft skin of her lower back.
Juliette's fingers tighten in my hair as she leans up, and I meet her halfway, our mouths coming together in a slow, tentative kiss that quickly deepens. Her hands slide up to frame my face, her nails scraping lightly against my scalp as she pulls me closer. The taste of her – warm and sweet with dessert – fills my senses as her tongue meets mine with desperate urgency. Her body presses flush against mine, the thin fabric of my shirt doing nothing to hide the rapid flutter of her heartbeat.
When I finally break the kiss, Juliette remains pressed against me, her forehead resting against my collarbone. Her breathing is uneven, shallow gasps as she tries to steady herself.
The room grows dimmer as we talk late into the night, the space between our words filling with the soft hum of central heating and the distant sound of rain tapping against the window. Juliette remains curled against me, her head resting on my chest, one arm draped across my stomach.
"I never thought I will feel like this," she murmurs, her fingers tracing lazy patterns on my shirt. "Not with you."
Her breath ghosts over my skin as she speaks, warm and slow.
"I don't think I believed in fate before this. But how else would I have ended up here, with you?"
I run my fingers through her damp hair, ponytail mostly undone now. We stay like this for a long moment, Juliette's face buried in my neck, her body pressed so tightly against mine it's as if she's trying to become one with me. My fingers trace slow circles along her back, feeling the delicate ridges of her spine through the thin fabric of the shirt she wears. She exhales shakily against my skin, her breath warm and uneven.
"I thought I will not sleep," she murmurs, almost inaudible. "I thought I will just lay here and look at the ceiling, thinking about everything." Her fingers flex against my shoulders. "But I don't want to do that now."
We make love again – slow and sleepy. Juliette relaxes into me in post-coital haze. My fingers trace slow circles along her bare back as she nuzzles into my neck, her body still warm and pliant from lovemaking. The soft sheets wrap around us both, creating a cocoon separate from the world outside these walls as we both finally drift away into sleep.
