Part One – After the Party

“Crap!” Amelia exclaimed as she emerged from the bathroom wrapped in a towel, her wet hair hanging around her face in rat-tails. “I didn’t plan for this!”

“What’s wrong?” Laura asked, concerned. “Did something happen?” Could it be that the eager young spit-piggy had got her first period in the shower? That could certainly complicate the plans for the next couple of days. Of course they all knew it was coming soon but she knew that Amelia had hoped for time to prepare, to consult a doctor and work out what could be done to enable to continue to enjoy “spit practice” with Josh without and risk of something happening that would make her ineligible to roast!

“No,” the pre-teen sighed. “I just realised I don’t have any other nice clothes with me! You said Mr Martin could take me to the theatre and to a nice restaurant and I want to look pretty for him but the only clothes I have are what I brought with me. My party outfit wouldn’t really be suitable and I don’t have anything else fancy!”

“Ah, I see!” Laura smiled. “Well I think I can help you with that! Shower’s all yours by the way!” she told her husband who had just finished unloading the car and was now coming upstairs, wanting to freshen up and change before heading out again for his romantic mini-break with his late daughter’s best friend.

It was Tuesday the twenty sixth of December, 2034, and the Martin family had recently arrived home from their Christmas party and sleepover at a local hall during which Laura and Josh Martin’s biological daughter Samantha had been roasted and served as the Christmas turkey, fulfilling a dream she has harboured for at least two thirds of her short but happy life. To fill the void left in their home and their hearts by her absence, the Martin’s had chosen to adopt two of her school friends, Erin and Ryan, a pair of siblings very close in age who had been been orphaned very early in life and raised by their Grandma who had passed away not too long ago, leaving them in the care of the state and living in a group foster home. The Martins had been granted legal guardianship of the siblings for one year after which, if all parties were in agreement, they would be allowed to officially adopt them.

Eleven year old Amelia had been Samantha’s best friend from school and, although an official date had yet to be set, she had agreed to roast at her sister’s baby’s christening in the spring. Having taken quite a shine to Josh when she had gone with him and Samantha for her DHLW interview and health-check and grading at the butcher’s, the cheeky youngster had arranged through her mum for Josh, or Mr Martin as she loved to call him, to give her a little “spit practice”, and this arrangement had blossomed into something close to a full-blown love affair, with the full knowledge and support of Mrs Martin!

Wanting to please their Sidney-obsessed daughter Willow who would be turning nine in January, as well as welcome their new niece and nephew into the family, Laura’s brother Marshall and his husband Clive had purchased the two sweet sisters from across the road, nine year old Ella and eleven year old Lydia, to be cooked and served in one of the private Sidney’s dining rooms and had assured everyone at the party that they would be invited! Willow’s ten year old brother Merlin had really hit it off with his new cousin Ryan at the party and was delighted that there was now another boy around his own age in the family!

Among the biggest surprises of the party had been how much Samantha’s cousin Nadine on her dad’s side had changed her views over the course of the afternoon and evening. At first, she had been so afraid of ending up on the menu herself that she had not wanted to go to the party at all. Fortunately, Samantha had managed to talk her around and she had arrived with her parents, Josh’s sister Julie and her husband Mike, and her younger siblings, six year old Alfie and Rosie who was two and a half. When the other girls had taken their clothes off to go play outside, she had refused to join them as they were all either already meat-girls themselves or at least open to the idea and she wanted to make it very clear that she was not. When they had eventually coerced her into stripping off for a group photo, explaining that they needed her bottom in order to have enough cheeks to print a message on, she had found she rather liked it. By the evening, she had been discussing as happily as the others which cooking methods were best suited to her body and how she thought she would taste and had been among the last to put their clothes back on that morning! Although only her dad and Laura’s parents who had been driving them home knew about it for the time being, she had even offered, albeit rather tentatively, to be next year’s turkey!

Also at the party had been Josh’s recently divorced co-worker Aaron and his fifteen year old daughter to whom Willow had seemed to take quite a shine! Seeing the spit behind the hall had given her ideas about how she might want to celebrate her birthday that Summer, ideas that the younger girls had all heartily endorsed!

“Hey, is it okay if we come in?” Laura knocked lightly on the slightly ajar door of the bedroom that had been Samantha’s but which now belonged to Erin and Ryan, for the time being at least, until they could get the planned remodel of the upstairs of the house done to give both children a space of their own. Although the door was open, she wanted to reinforce to her new son and daughter that their personal space was their own and that this was not a house where people would just come barging in whenever they wanted.

“Sure!” Ryan called in a friendly tone. Laura pushed the door open and saw him laying on the bed looking with interest through Samantha’s copy of “Rose the Christmas Turkey”, presumably comparing it to the short film adaptation he had now seen twice. It felt strange walking into Samantha’s room and finding it more or less exactly how she had left it, knowing that she would never be coming back to it. Soon, of course, the siblings would make it their own but for the moment at least, Samantha’s presence was undeniable.

“Hi!” Erin, who was stood in front of the full-length mirror on the wardrobe door brushing her curly red hair looked over and smiled. “Is everything okay? We were just getting changed out of our party clothes.” Both siblings were now wearing jeans, Erin in a T-shirt and Ryan in a casual checked flannel shirt.

“Oh everything is just fine!” Laura assured them. “But the party clothes thing is really why we’re here. Amelia needs a nice outfit for this evening and I wanted to see if any of Sammie’s things might fit her. You’re thinner than she was,” she observed to the towel-clad girl beside her, “but a lot of her dresses were starting to get pretty tight! Let me see…” Erin helpfully stepped aside and let her new mum open the wardrobe.

“Let me see…” Laura looked through the hanging dresses, pausing by a few but dismissing them for one reason or another. “I’m sure it’s…” she muttered as remembered one that might be suitable. “I thought it was… ah-ha!” she declared in triumph, pulling a strapless, straight-cut maroon satin dress from the wardrobe. “Here it is!” She turned around to show it to Amelia. “What do you think? Pair it with some black tights and maybe that fluffy black bolero Sammie had and I think you have a perfect outfit!”

“Wow, slinky!” Amelia grinned, a little surprised to see such a thing in her friend’s wardrobe.

“I know!” Laura chuckled. “Her Gram bought it for her when she was staying with them in the Summer. That was for a theatre trip too actually!” She chuckled at the memory. “I thought it was a bit too grown-up for her at the time but, well,” she chuckled again, “people and circumstances change, huh? Now,” she turned closed the wardrobe and began to rummage though the drawers of the chest that stood next to it, “do you have clean underwear? We can find you some tights in here.” She pulled out a rolled pair and tossed them onto the bed. Amelia confirmed that she did have some clean panties in her bag which was still in the corner of the room where she had left it after getting ready for the party. “Good! Sammie’s hair-dryer is on the side there,” she pointed out, “you can use that.” Amelia simply thanked her, grateful for her kindness and not feeling the need to point out that she had got ready for outings with Samantha more than once over the last few weeks and knew very well where everything was.

“You don’t mind if I get ready in here, do you?” Amelia asked Ryan and Erin who assured her it was no problem, still trying to get used to the idea that the room was them.

“Good, I’ll leave you to it!” Laura smiled, taking the bolero she had mentioned out of another drawer and putting it on the bed. “We’ll be heading over to your old place in about an hour, if that’s okay?” she told her new son and daughter. “Have a look through all of Sammie’s stuff and see what you’d like to keep. Clothes, toys, gadgets… Anything she had is yours now.” She smiled. “Don’t worry,” she assured them, “you don’t have to sort through it all today but before school’s back I’d like to have it all her stuff sorted out. Anything you don’t want, Dad and I will go through and maybe hold onto a few keepsakes then find new homes for the rest. Okay?” They nodded happily. “Great!” She turned back to Amelia. “I’ll make sure Josh is ready to head out in half an hour, okay?” She left the children together in what had been Samantha’s room and went to see how her husband was getting on.

She could hear the shower still running as she passed the bathroom so went into their bedroom and put together an overnight bag for her husband with deodorant, aftershave, a disposable razor, underwear and a shirt, as well as pyjamas for appearances, although she was certain they would not be needed. She found Amelia’s pyjamas in one of the bags that had come back from the hall and would give them to her to add to the mostly packed bag she already had with her. She was pleased to see that he already seemed to have picked out a nice shirt and pair of trousers to wear which were waiting on the bed. Seeing his phone next to them, she took out her own and forwarded three emails to him. Just as she did so, she heard the shower stop and his footsteps.

“What’s this?” he asked, hearing his phone chirp as he came into the room and picking it up to check, expecting to see messages from the various party guests confirming that they had got home safely or thanking the family for hosting but instead he saw three emails from his wife.

“Hope you don’t mind!” she smiled a little sheepishly. “I thought it was better to get things organised! Hotel check-in is from three onwards, you have a reservation at a nice but not too fancy restaurant at five then tickets for that Phantom of the Opera sequel at seven!”

“Wow!” Josh chuckled. “When did you do all this?”

“In the car while you were driving home.” she admitted. “I was worried what you might get stuck with if you tried to arrange it all yourself or waited until you got into town to find somewhere to stay or to eat! It is Boxing Day after all, a lot of people are still out celebrating! Oh, and the hotel has you listed as father and daughter which I thought was easier so I’ll let Amelia know she needs to behave in the lobby! Once that Do-Not-Disturb sign is on your door, however, you’re all hers!”

“Oh my!” Josh chuckled, holding onto the towel around his waist with one hand and pulling his wife in for a hug with the other, dropping his phone back onto the bed and kissing her lovingly. “You know, I did always say that I ever had an affair, you’d have to organise it for me!”

“Well, here we are!” she giggled and Josh kissed her again.

“Just one thing,” he asked, “why the sequel? Why not just the main one?”

“She and Sammie watched that one they did from the Albert Hall already, the one in your blu-ray collection?” she explained. “So she knows that story already and there’s something about the music in the second one that’s just so…” She gave a little shiver. “I don’t know how he managed to make a tune sound like sex but he did!”

“Well I guess I’d better get ready, then!” Josh grinned. “Sounds like I have quite the night ahead of me!”

A little over twenty minutes later, Josh and Amelia were standing at the bus stop and found their way to the hotel just ten minutes before check-in time. The chain hotel was what Josh would have described as high-end affordable – the kind of place that was within the reach of average families like his own but definitely as a treat. The lobby was decorated with a Christmas tree that had to be at least fifteen feet tall next to what they were fairy sure was a real wooden sleigh, painted red, highly polished and with a pile or presumably decorative presents in the back. Seeing as they were so close to the check-in time, they decided to try their luck at the desk, fully prepared to wait in the comfortable lobby until three if necessary. They were greeted by a pretty black woman in her mid thirties wearing a smart uniform and a polished customer service smile. She gave the impression of being someone who would do whatever she could to assist friendly and cooperative customers but would take no nonsense from anyone who tried to push their luck. In other words, the perfect choice for manning the main reception desk of a reasonably up-market hotel in the middle of the city’s theatre district.

“Good afternoon and welcome to the Roebuck International.” she smiled at them and for a second Josh found himself surprised that she didn’t speak with an American accent, although he quickly realised that there was no reason why she would! “How can I help you today?”

“We have a reservation under Martin?” Josh volunteered. “I know we’re a little early. We don’t mind waiting if we need to but thought we’d check.”

“That’s no problem at all.” The woman smiled, ticking off the fact that Josh had passed the first Good Customer check on her mental list by acknowledging that he was not demanding an early check in. “Let me see, ah yes, booked online earlier today. Do you have a confirmation code, please?” Josh read out the number from the email Laura had forwarded to him. “Great! And I see your booking is for a single night for a room with two queen-sized beds for you and your daughter?” Josh confirmed this and the woman looked appraisingly at him then at Amelia who stood demure and quiet by his side, then back to him. Josh started to feel nervous. While there would be nothing about either of them that would make someone think that he and the girl by his side were definitely not related, it was not as if they looked incredibly alike either.

“Do you have any ID with you, honey?” she asked Amelia after a few incredibly long seconds. Amelia answered truthfully that she did not. “You know,” the woman observed in a slightly arch tone, “we are quite popular with fathers and daughters.” Josh felt his lips turning dry and he curled his toes within his shoes. “You been having a good Christmas?” the woman asked Amelia in a more friendly but still very measured tone.

“The best!” Amelia grinned brightly.

“Yes, we’ve…” Josh began to answer but the woman put a finger up to silence him.

“I’m sorry Sir, but I’m speaking to the young lady just now.” Her smile never slipped as she addressed him but the steeliness in her eyes told him that he needed to let her finish the conversation on her own terms or things would not be ending well for him. “Are you happy to be here with your Daddy?” she turned back to Amelia who grinned and gave an emphatic nod. “Good.” The woman smiled. “And is there anyone you’d like me to call to let them know that you’re here? Your mother perhaps or any other relative?”

“Oh no!” Amelia replied brightly. “Mummy made the booking and everyone else who needs to know where we are already does. Why?” She asked curiously, her head tilted to one side. Josh could feel his heart getting ready to burst clean out of his chest. “Is there a problem?”

“Not at all!” the woman grinned, her expression and indeed her whole body seeming to relax. “Like I said, we’re very popular with Daddies and daughters!” She winked at Josh who blushed but felt a deep sense of relief. “It’s just my job to make sure that everyone is where they want to be, if you catch my drift?” Amelia giggled and nodded. “Okay so your reservation… ooh!” she pulled a face that was a little too theatrical to be spontaneous. “I’m afraid there was a glitch on our third party reservation system and we’re actually sold out of the kind of room that you ordered. So,” she put up a finger again as both opened their mouths to ask what alternatives could be arranged, “I’ll need to upgrade you to the next tier but I’m afraid I only have rooms with a single Super-King bed available. Would that be okay?” She directed this question to Amelia rather than to Josh.

“I guess!” the pre-teen sighed theatrically. “It’s just for one night after all. As long as Daddy promises not to fart under the covers!”

“I make no promises but I’ll try my best!” Josh chuckled, realising just how on their side the rather formidable woman behind the desk was and that she was pulling strings to make sure they had a great night.

“Okay!” the woman chuckled, tapping some keys. “So, you will be in room five one four, it has a shower and a hot-tub bath, just please remember not to put bubble-bath in if you want to use the jets!” she chuckled, making Josh wonder how many previous guests had made this mistake before she started issuing the warning as standard! “Since we weren’t able to provide you with the room you booked on this occasion I will be comping your breakfast.” she explained in a friendly but business-like tone, “Breakfast is served from seven until eleven AM in the main dining room. I will also have a family gift basket sent up to your room and some drinks and some drinks added to the mini-fridge in the room. All with our compliments. Don’t worry,” she smiled, “there’s no mini-bar that you get charged for. Everything consumable in the room is yours to take away if you don’t use it tonight and if you do want to pay for anything else, room service is available until one AM. I’ll just get your keys printed up then you’re good to go.”

“That’s incredibly kind of you!” Josh smiled, earning him the other tick on her mental checklist. “We were going to go out once we’d dropped out bags off.” he ventured. “Is that okay or should we wait until the things have been brought up?”

“Oh no, you go enjoy the city!” the woman smiled. “Just make sure the Do Not Disturb sign is not on your door when you go out, and everything will be waiting for you when you get back. Of course,” she winked again, “we do recommend putting the sign up once you’re back. Helps to avoid awkwardness all round!” Josh gave a slightly embarrassed chuckle, remembering the comment Laura had made when she told him about the booking. “Here are your key cards,” the woman took the plastic cards from the printer, slipped them into paper sleeves and handed them over, one to each of the guests, “your upgraded room comes with an automatic late checkout of mid-day. I hope that will be okay for you?”

“Absolutely!” Josh nodded gratefully. “Thank you so much for everything you’ve done!”

“I’m here to make sure our guests have the best possible time during their stay with us.” She grinned. “If you have any questions or issues, don’t hesitate to let me know!”

“Just one, actually?” Amelia smiled, having been studying the stiff paper envelope and the key-card inside it. “Roebuck International? Is that like Sidney Roebuck?” Josh was shocked at himself for not having made the same connection when he saw the name of the hotel his wife had booked. It had just been so recognisable, like any other chain, that he hasn’t given it any particular thought!

“It certainly is!” the woman woman smiled warmly, impressed by the girl’s knowledge. “This chain is owned by her Daddy, Orin Roebuck.”

“Does that mean you have Girl on the breakfast menu?” Amelia asked excitedly.

“It certainly does!” grinned the woman. “There’s a special section on the menu marked Sidney’s Specials. It’s not like eating at an actual Sidney’s of course,” she explained almost apologetically, “but we do like the honour her and her vision here!”

“That’s awesome!” the excited, happy pre-teen beamed. “Thanks for everything!”

With Amelia excited and Josh trying to recover from his near-heart attack, they made their way to the lift and Amelia pressed the button for the fifth floor.

“You were sweating so badly back there!” she teased with a giggle.

“Can you blame me?” Josh chuckled a little awkwardly. “I thought she was going to call the Police on us!”

“Yeah that could have made things awkward!” she chuckled with a shrug. “I’m sure my mum could have cleared things up but...still.” She slipped her hand into Josh’s. “How kind was that lady, huh?” she smiled sweetly. “She really wanted to make sure we have a good night!” The lift pinged and the doors slip open onto the fifth floor. “What number was it again?” Amelia asked.

“Five one four.” Josh reminded her, then spotted the brass plaque on the wall positioned intentionally to help people coming out of the lift know which was to go. “This way!” he smiled. They turned left and followed the corridor right down to the end, checking off door numbers as they went. “This is the one!” he grinned. “Would you like to do the honours?”

Grinning excitedly, Amelia removed her key-card from its paper folder, thinking that she should find a safe place for it in her bag as it would make a nice keep-sake, then held it against the sensor under the door handle. The sensor flashed red then turned green and Amelia turned the handle and pushed the door open. Inside, the room was in near total darkness, illuminated only by the soft, warm light from the corridor and some kind of safety light from what she assumed to be the bathroom. Feeling beside the door, she found the light switch and pressed it but nothing happened. Confused, she turned it on and off a few times.

“Maybe you have to put the card in somewhere?” Josh suggested and Amelia looked down to see a square box on the wall below the light switch at about waist height. She pushed her key-card into the slot in the top and the room burst into light.

“Wow!” she gasped in awe and she looked around at the opulent surroundings then approached the huge bed which looked almost twice the size of the one Josh and Laura had in their room at home and flopped down onto it on her back. Josh closed the door behind them and set the bags down beside the bed that lay down beside her. “Our own luxury fuck-pad!” Amelia exclaimed in delight. She and Josh rolled onto their sides so that they were facing each other then kissed passionately. Their hands began to explore each other but when Amelia tried to un-tuck his shirt, Josh stopped her, taking hold of her hands and looking lovingly into her eyes.
