A slight world-building question if I may? In this and Riley's story there is discussion of health checks etc to make sure the animals are fit for human consumption but, forgive me if I missed this, you don't say what happens to those who do not meet the standard. Are they used for pet/farm animal feed? Conscripted to some kind of slave labour in the processing centres or just selectively harvested with imperfect parts of their body discarded?
