The forest had become a maze of twisted shadows, the canopy above blocking out any trace of moonlight that might have guided Lindy back to safety. Her breath came in ragged gasps, each inhale burning in her chest as her legs pumped beneath her, carrying her over roots and rocks that seemed to reach up to trip her. The silence of the woods was broken only by her own frantic footsteps and the snapping of twigs underfoot—until she heard it. A low, guttural growl, deep and resonant, that vibrated through the earth and into her bones.
She didn't dare look back. She knew it was there, somewhere behind her, closing the distance with a predator's patience. The creature had been stalking her for what felt like hours, herding her deeper into the heart of the forest, away from the dirt path she had lost hours ago. Her heart pounded in her ears, drowning out the sound of her own sobbing breaths. She stumbled over a fallen log, catching herself on her palms, scraping them raw, but she forced herself upright and kept running.
A roar split the night, so close now that the trees themselves seemed to tremble. Lindy screamed, a raw, desperate sound that echoed uselessly into the darkness. She pushed herself harder, her legs screaming in protest, her lungs burning. She could feel the creature's presence like a weight on her back, a primal terror that made her skin crawl. She was prey, and she knew it.
Then impact.
A heavy, crushing weight slammed into her from behind, driving the air from her lungs. She hit the ground hard, her face grinding into the dirt and leaves, the taste of soil and blood filling her mouth. Pain exploded through her body, sharp and blinding, and she tried to thrash, to fight, but the creature was too strong. Its massive hands gripped her shoulders, pinning her down, and she felt hot breath on the back of her neck. She didn't have the strength to scream again. Her vision blurred, the edges going dark as consciousness slipped away. The last thing she saw was the gnarled roots of an ancient tree, and then there was nothing.
---
Light flickered somewhere beyond her eyelids, a warm, pulsing glow that seeped into the darkness. Lindy groaned, her head throbbing, her body aching in a thousand places. She tried to move, but her limbs wouldn't obey. Confusion gave way to a cold, crawling dread as she realized why.
She was naked.
The cool air of the lair kissed her skin, raising goosebumps across her exposed flesh. She opened her eyes slowly, blinking against the dim light cast by a fire burning in a crude pit at the center of the cavern. The walls were rough-hewn stone, draped with animal pelts and the bones of unknown prey. Roots dangled from the ceiling like the fingers of some buried giant, and the floor was packed earth, smooth from years of use.
Lindy's arms were bound above her head, her wrists tied together with a thick, braided leather cord that was looped over a sturdy root protruding from the wall. Her legs were spread and tied to two separate stakes driven into the ground, the leather biting into her ankles. She was completely exposed, her body on full display, vulnerable and helpless. The bindings were tight enough that any struggle would only chafe her skin, but loose enough that she could shift slightly, though it did nothing to ease her terror.
Tears welled in her eyes, hot and bitter, and she let them fall. They traced paths through the grime on her cheeks as she began to sob, her body shaking with the force of her grief. She was going to die here. She was going to be devoured by some monstrous thing that lived in the dark, and no one would ever find her remains.
The soft pad of footsteps made her freeze. Her sobs hitched, and she lifted her head, her eyes wide and streaming. The creature stepped into the circle of firelight, and she saw it clearly for the first time.
It was tall, easily seven feet, with a frame that was both lean and powerfully muscled. Its skin was a deep, mottled grey, like old stone, and its features were rugged but not hideous—almost human, but distinctly other. Its eyes were large and dark, with no visible pupils, and they held a strange, calm intelligence. A mane of coarse black hair fell past its shoulders, and its hands, which ended in blunt, dark claws, hung at its sides. It wore no clothing, and she saw the heavy, flaccid shaft that hung between its legs, a stark reminder of its maleness.
She braced herself for pain, for the tearing of flesh and the crunch of bone. But instead, the creature approached slowly, its movements deliberate and gentle. It crouched beside her, its massive form blocking the firelight, casting her in shadow. And then it did something she didn't expect.
It reached out, and with a surprising tenderness, it wiped a tear from her cheek with one clawed finger. The touch was warm, almost soothing.
"Shh," it said. The voice was low and rumbling, like stones grinding together, but it was not harsh. "Do not cry, little one."
Lindy's breath hitched, her sobs stuttering into silence. She stared up at the creature, her mind reeling. It could speak. It was comforting her. The absurdity of it almost made her laugh, but there was no humor in her heart.
"I know you are afraid," the creature continued, its hand moving to brush a strand of hair from her face. The gesture was oddly paternal, a stark contrast to the situation. "But I promise you this: you will not feel much pain. I am skilled, and I have learned to be quick. The end will come swiftly, and you will not linger in agony."
It paused, its dark eyes meeting hers. There was no malice in them, only a kind of resigned necessity, as if this was simply the way of things.
"Until then, I will keep you warm," it said, its voice dropping to a murmur. "I will hold you, and you will not be alone in your final moments. That is the comfort I offer. That is the mercy I give."
Its hand moved down, resting gently on her stomach, its palm warm against her trembling skin. Lindy's tears continued to fall, but they were quieter now, mixed with a strange, twisted relief. She was still terrified, still bound and naked and waiting to die, but the creature's words had stolen some of the edge from her fear. It wasn't a mindless beast. It was something that understood, something that offered a sliver of peace before the darkness took her.
She didn't know if that made it better or worse. But as the creature settled beside her, pulling her against its solid warmth, she found herself leaning into it, her body trembling against its chest. It stroked her hair, humming a low, melodic note, and for a moment, in that impossible, terrifying place, Lindy felt almost safe.
