Sitting down at the makeup table, both girls pulled on their boots. As designed, they were a snug fit but felt incredibly comfortable! Kerry stretched out her legs in front of her to admire the boots which on their own probably cost as much as her entire wardrobe.
“What do you think?” Josie asked encouragingly. “Get up and have a little walk around!” The girls did as she suggested and found the boots so comfortable that they both felt a little sad they would only get to enjoy them for a few hours.
“If I were Sidney, I’d never have worn anything else!” Katie exclaimed.
“Well she rarely did in public!” Hunter reminded them with a chuckle.
“What was she like really?” Kerry asked with curiosity. “Like, when she did wear clothes, did she stuff that would have gone with these?” She imagined Hunter’s famous sister in pink or white Daisy Dukes with a tied-up shirt, or a leather jacket and skirt combo with a crop-top underneath.
“Strictly between us?” Hunter chuckled. “She was a total tom-boy! Hardly ever wore makeup, wore her hair in a simple pony-tail, it was straight like yours by the way, li’l red.” he observed with a warm smile, clearly fondly remembering her little sister. “She went to a pretty exclusive school, the kind where everyone’s parents are either rich, famous or powerful, so that had a pretty strict uniform but otherwise she mostly wore baggy jeans or shorts depending on the weather and a hockey jersey or maybe a band T-shirt. Trust me,” he chuckled again, “she used to love how she could stand right next to one of her bill-boards and not get recognised! Heck, right up until just before the end when she got to give a little speech about her mission, more than half that school didn’t realise she was the same girl from the posters! She used our mom’s surname at school for security.”
“Oh wow so she was kinda like a super-hero!” Kerry grinned.
“She sure was!” Hunter laughed warmly. “You know, I have a feeling the two of you would have got on great!”
“And me, right?” Katie asked hopefully, sounding a little nervous and put out.
“Oh she’d have absolutely adored you!” Hunter ruffled her hair and kissed the top of her head. “You’re just the kind of eager little piglet she had in mind when she pushed for the rights she was fighting for to be universal!” Katie beamed happily.
“So did she ever…” Kerry blushed. “You know, like we just did?”
“Fuck no!” Hunter practically roared with laugher. “That was not her scene at all! Did did get kinda curious about one guy on her team but I think that was more to do with fomo than anything else. Her drives were well and truly all connected to being eaten!” The girls both giggled.
“What’s fomo?” asked Katie.
“F. O. M. O.” Hunter spelled out the acronym. “Fear of mission out! I think it struck her towards the end that she was going to be missing out on a whole lot of life she she wanted to cram as much as possible into the time she had left. Get things ticked off, under her belt.” As he spoke, Hunter began to worry that he might have said the wrong thing. After all, these two girls were hours at most from their own deaths and he didn’t want to complicate the situation by triggering last-minute regrets but fortunately neither of them seemed to think in these terms.
“Oh so like a bucket list?” Katie nodded thoughtfully, showing that she understood. “Mummy got me to write one of those of all the things I wanted to do over the weekend and she said we’d do as many as we could!”
“Exactly!” Hunter grinned. Before the conversation could go any further, Josie returned with the two women in charge of hair and makeup. Both were carrying cups of coffee in paper cups and had the happy expressions of people who have just enjoyed a good breakfast! Setting the hats of the table, Josie explained she had some things she needed to run through with Hunter and left the meat-girls with the two woman.
The four chatted happily while the women did their work. Although they had not known Sidney personally, they did work with some of the dance troupes that every restaurant had and usually got involved with any big, public events, especially the openings of new restaurants. The makeup they used on the girls was very subtle, enhancing their natural prettiness without giving them the “Pageant Queen” look that Sidney was famous for. Both girls giggled as some pink powder was applied to their nipples to make them stand out a little more once flavourless moisturiser had been rubbed all over their bodies to give their skin a nice sheen. Of course before roasting they would be oiled up but that was to come later and walking or being driven from place to place while covered in cooking oil was messy and impractical! With their faces and bodies taken care of, the women’s attention was turned next to the girls’ hair. Katie’s they added some extra curls to, accentuation its natural waviness, and Kerry’s they straightened then tied into a neat single braid. Finally they both put their hats on and the effect was complete!
While the woman worked, the rest of the crew had started to filter back in and by the time they were finished, Josie was waiting to escort the girls to the car that would take them to the currently vacant plot of land which would soon be the local Sidney’s ready for the ground-breaking ceremony.
