The bond between the hungry sisters.

2031

The chain on Lila’s bicycle rattled as she pedaled harder; the rhythmic clicking was the only sound interrupting her thoughts. She hadn’t slept properly since finding the data and images on her father’s computer—just a few days ago. The ride was more exhausting than usual. The streets blurred past her; they seemed alien, even though this was her hometown. She had never noticed how many oversized BBQ grills stood in the front yards of this leafy suburb.

Anja’s house came into view at the end of the cul-de-sac—a modern structure of glass and red brick.
It had been two years since Lila last saw her sister; two years had passed since the big argument between Anja and their father.
Lila gripped the brake levers. She came to a halt with a squeal. Her gaze swept over the large, quiet property. The lawn was immaculately manicured, save for the fire pit. A roasting spit rose above the ashes; polished steel glinted in the sun. Big enough for a person. Big enough for her. Lila swallowed; her throat was dry.
