My spoon hovered over the steaming soup. Egon’s gaze drifted to my neck, where the silver chain glinted.
"He took the girls," he whispered. "Dragged them with his men through moonlit forests to his fortress, Rubensstein.
Not for ransom. Not for power." His voice dropped lower. "For a feast." I froze.
The warmth of the tavern vanished. "A lavish banquet," he whispered, leaning closer.
"Eugen had the three girls roasted over a fire in his fortress courtyard."
