**The Liberation of the Spirit** – Teil 1

    ## A Tuesday in November

The sky above the city was a single, impenetrable blanket of lead that had already completely swallowed the last light of the late afternoon. An icy drizzle lashed against the dirty windows of the anonymous apartment blocks, where, layer upon layer, the misery of overpopulation piled up.

The air smelled of wet asphalt, burnt plastic, and the omnipresent despair of eight million people fighting for breath and dignity in a space far too cramped. In this dystopian confinement, where society had long been teetering on the brink of its breaking point, peculiar, macabre regulations had taken hold. When the will to live faded, the desire to die could at least be fulfilled efficiently and, in a perverse way, with dignity.

For this purpose, there was the service of the Snuf Officers, officially registered executors of consensual suicides, whose work was based on a simple contract: a signature in exchange for salvation.

At exactly six o’clock, as the last gray shadows faded into deep black, a short, sharp ring sounded at the door of an apartment on the seventh floor of one such concrete block. Inside, there was a strange mixture of clinical cleanliness and tense anticipation.

Monika opened the door, her face a mask of calm determination, behind which an almost euphoric nervousness pulsed. Standing before her was a man in a dark, slightly damp trench coat; his face was expressionless, professional, his eyes taking in the surroundings with the routine of a craftsman entering a new workplace.

“Snufdienst,” he said curtly, without giving his name. Names were irrelevant here; he was the function, they were the clients.

“Come in,” Monika replied in a voice that sounded surprisingly firm, and stepped aside. The agent entered, let his dripping-wet coat slide over a chair provided for that purpose, and followed Monika into the living room.

The room was spartanly furnished but tidy. A bookshelf, crammed with works on East Asian philosophy and history, dominated one wall. Three clean cups were already on the coffee table. Andrea was already sitting on the couch, her hands folded in her lap, and nodded silently to the officer. Her tension was physically palpable, an electric charge in the stuffy air.

“Would you like some coffee?” Monika asked politely, almost normally.

“Gladly,” the official replied and sat down in the offered armchair while Monika disappeared into the small kitchenette. The soft clatter of the coffee maker filled the oppressive silence.

The official used the time to open his briefcase and pull out a thin binder. When Monika returned with the tray, he gratefully accepted the cup, took a sip of the hot, bitter brew, and then laid the papers out on the table in front of him.

“We must take care of the formalities first,” he began; his voice was matter-of-fact, devoid of any emotion. “I need positive identification from each of you, and I’ll confirm once more: you, Monika Schneider, twenty-five years old, and you, Andrea Vogel, twenty-six years old, are jointly and mutually applying to carry out a suicide using the method of traditional Japanese harakiri, also known as seppuku. Is that correct?”

Both women nodded in unison. “Yes,” said Monika. “That is correct.”

Andrea added only a quiet “Yes,” her gaze fixed on the documents.

“I don’t care about the details of your reasons; they’re none of my business,” the official continued as he pulled two copies of the contract from the folder. “The only thing that matters is your free will, documented by your signature. By signing, you agree to the procedure, release me from any liability, and confirm that no external pressure has been exerted on you. The state recognizes this as a legal act of self-determination.”

He slid the papers across the table toward them. Next to them, he placed two blunt ballpoint pens.

Monika took her contract first, skimming the terse, legal sentences in which her own death was reduced to an administrative matter. Then, without hesitation, she signed her name on the marked line. The pen scratched dryly against the paper.

Andrea hesitated for a moment, took a deep breath, and then also let her name flow onto the page. A final gesture.

The official collected the documents, checked the signatures, and nodded with satisfaction. “Everything’s in order. The deed is now legal. We can begin whenever you’re ready.”

He took another sip of coffee. “Before we get to the practical implementation, I must ask about the chosen method for protocol reasons. Various options are available. You specified harakiri. Why exactly this method?”

    ## The Philosophy of the Gut

Monika leaned back, her face taking on an almost passionate expression. “Because it is the only true one,” she began, her voice taking on a lecturing tone that suited her studies in Sinology.

“In many ancient cultures, especially in East Asia, the belly is considered the seat of the soul, the *Hara*. Not the heart, not the brain. Here, in this fleshy container of skin, fat, and muscle, we don’t just digest food. This is where our life force gathers, where our deepest feelings reside—our shame, our courage. Everything we are happens here.”

She placed a hand flat on her own, still-covered abdomen.

Andrea added, more quietly but just as convincingly: “The idea that our spirit, our essence, is trapped in this dark, warm space of organs and intestines has always fascinated us. Food enters through the mouth, is chewed, swallowed, broken down by acid and enzymes, and becomes part of us. A part of the world becomes our body in the belly. That is magical. And horribly beautiful.”

She looked directly at the officer. “Opening this prison cell means setting the spirit free once and for all. Opening the door for it so it can escape. It is a liberation ceremony.”

Monika continued, her eyes shining with excitement. “And it’s about the truth of materiality. We are flesh. We are blood, bile, digestive juices, and feces. These romantic notions of a soul floating somewhere in nothingness are ridiculous. Our soul *smells*. It is damp and warm and has a texture. We want to see it. We want to touch it.”

She lowered her voice to an intimate whisper. “We even want to taste it before we go. A part of us should be the last taste on our tongue. That is the complete return to ourselves.”

The official listened; his face remained a professional mask, but a barely perceptible twitch in his cheek betrayed that the intensity of her words had not left him unmoved. “I understand,” he said simply. “The aesthetics of autophagy. Unusual, but not unknown in my line of work.”

He set down the empty cup. “How exactly do you envision the process? Where is the procedure to take place?”

Monika jumped to her feet, her movements suddenly energetic, almost frantic. “Here. Right in the middle of the room.”

She grabbed the coffee table by one edge and shoved it aside with a jerky jerk, revealing a clear patch of the dark hardwood floor. “The floor is ideal. Smooth, heavily sealed, easy to wash off.”

She pointed to the bare surface. “This is where we’ll kneel. This is where we’ll open ourselves up.”

She turned back to the official. “I’ve studied the technique. The classic horizontal incision. Starting at the lower left, below the navel, then in one swift motion across to the right, about fifteen to twenty centimeters. At the end of the movement, turn the blade upward for the final slitting effect.”

She spoke like a surgeon describing a routine operation. “You cut through the skin, the subcutaneous fat, and the rectus abdominis muscle. Eventually, the peritoneum—the abdominal lining—ruptures. Then the first loops of intestine spill out. The puncture itself barely bleeds; the blade acts as a tamponade. Only when you cut open does the heavy bleeding begin.”

The official nodded knowingly. “A correct description. It is an extremely painful method. Death does not occur immediately, but from blood loss and shock. It requires immense willpower.”

His eyes scanned the two women, as if he wanted to gauge that willpower in them.

“We have it,” Andrea said in a firm voice. “Our future is nothing but a miserable existence anyway. No jobs, no money, just the endless line for basic food rations. Vegetating away in this concrete cave until we’re forgotten. That’s no life. It’s a slow, undignified decay. We’d rather decay quickly and see something… beautiful in the process. Something true.”

A silent agreement spread through the room. The official stood up. “Then we should begin. Who would like to go first?”

    Monika stepped forward. “Me.”

    ## Monika’s Unveiling

Without another word, Monika began to undress. Her movements were not exhibitionistic, but marked by a ceremonial slowness.

She stood in the center of the cleared square on the parquet floor and unbuttoned her simple cotton shirt. First the top button, then the next, with calm, precise fingers. With every button she undid, she revealed more of herself. First her collarbone, then the base of small, firm breasts whose nipples had already hardened from tension and the cold. Finally, her entire upper body was bare.

She was slender, athletic, with the defined but not muscular figure of a gymnast. Then she undid the drawstring on her sweatpants, slid the waistband over her hips, and let the garment fall into a ring around her ankles, stepping out of it with a light step.

Now she stood completely naked in the cool room air, keeping only her socks on.

Her belly was, as she had described it, a fascinating formation. Two distinct, soft abdominal folds ran across the smooth, pale skin. One ran horizontally just below her navel; another, slightly less pronounced, crossed the navel itself, which sat deep and large like an old silver coin in her center.

It was an unmistakably erotic belly, soft, vulnerable, and yet full of vibrant tension. She took a deep breath, and the folds deepened as her abdominal wall rose.

The officer watching her couldn’t prevent a reaction from stirring in his own pants. A distinct, embarrassing swelling that stretched the fabric of his uniform. Monika noticed it; her gaze briefly drifted downward, and a tiny, triumphant smile tugged at her lips. This was power, even in her complete vulnerability.

Instead of standing up, Monika crouched down and then slowly lowered herself onto her heels until she was sitting in the traditional seiza kneeling position on the hard parquet floor.

Her buttocks rested on her heels, her back was straight as a board, her bare shoulders pulled taut backward. The position accentuated the curves of her body, cast shadows into the creases of her abdomen, and made her navel appear like a dark eye in the center of her body.

She was breathing heavily, the air hissing in and out between her slightly parted lips.

“The knife,” she said, her voice now nothing more than a hoarse whisper.

The officer reached into the inside pocket of his jacket and pulled out a long, narrow wooden case. He opened it and presented the contents: a tanto, a traditional Japanese short sword.

The blade was about twenty-five centimeters long, made of matte steel, with a slight, elegant curve. It was moderately sharp—sharp enough for the task, but not razor-sharp enough to glide effortlessly; it would offer resistance, would require force. The handle was made of dark wood, with a simple wrapping of cotton cord. A tool of death, sober and functional.

Monika reached out her hand, and the officer placed the tanto, blade facing him, into her palm. The cold of the metal made her shiver. She gripped the handle with a firm, bony grip. Then she turned the weapon in her hand until the tip pointed at her own soft lower abdomen.

Now a meticulous preparation began. With the fingers of her left hand, she ran her fingers over her own skin, feeling the contours of her abdomen. She stroked the lower abdominal fold, feeling the underlying fatty tissue give way. She circled her deep navel, feeling the slight elevation of its rim.

Her fingers searched, found, confirmed. Finally, her index finger came to rest about three finger-widths to the left and below the rim of her navel, at a spot where the skin was stretched particularly taut over the underlying muscle. Here. Right here.

She placed the tip of the tanto on that spot. The cold metal tip pressed a small dent into her skin, but it did not penetrate. Everything inside her froze. Her breath caught. The world shrank to this one point, to the pressure between steel and flesh.

The room was so quiet that one could hear the faint hum of the refrigerator in the kitchenette. Andrea was breathing heavily; the officer stood motionless like a statue.

Then, with an abrupt, hip-driven jerk, Monika thrust forward.

It was no gentle penetration. It was a brutal, determined thrust. The tip of the tanto dug into her skin, initially forming only a deepening funnel of resistant tissue. Her skin stretched, turning pale around the point of pressure, but did not give way.

Monika’s face contorted into a grimace of concentrated effort. She pressed her lips together; her nostrils quivered.

    *Rrrr-tsch.*

A short, crackling, almost plastic sound, as if thick packing tape were being torn. The skin had yielded to the pressure, had torn. The tip of the knife had penetrated the first barrier and now stood perhaps two millimeters deep in her body.

A first, piercingly sharp signal of pain shot through her nerve pathways. She let out a strained, hissing sound: “Tsssss-ah!”

She paused, instinctively curling forward, her upper body slumping over her knees. The knife’s handle now protruded from her lower abdomen like a foreign, monstrous accessory. There was hardly any blood to be seen yet, just a tiny, dark circle around the entry point.

The pain was a localized, burning stab. She gasped for air, straightening up again with an incredible effort of will. Her eyes were wide open, her

Andrea sat there as if petrified. She had been forced to witness every moment, every moan, every tearing sound. Her hands clenched the seat of the sofa so tightly that her knuckles turned white. A war raged within her between revulsion, sheer horror, and an almost unbearable, arousing fascination.

The sight of Monika’s exposed, steaming entrails—this raw, true interior of her friend—sent a shiver through her that reached to the deepest roots of her existence. It was ugly. It was terrible. It was the most honest thing she had ever seen.

The Snuf officer didn’t move until after a long minute of silence. He stepped forward, knelt beside Monika’s motionless body, and checked her pulse with two professional fingers on her carotid artery. Nothing. He nodded, stood up, and wiped his bloodstained fingers on a white cotton handkerchief.

“Phase one complete,” he said in his monotonous official voice. Then he turned to Andrea. “Are you ready for phase two? You can back out at any time. The contract applies per person.”

Andrea swallowed hard. Her mouth was parched. She looked up from her friend’s corpse, eyed the blood-smeared tanto lying on the floor, and then the officer. There was no encouragement in his eyes, but no judgment either. Only waiting professionalism. That gave her a strange sense of support.

“I’m ready,” she managed to say. Her voice sounded strange, hoarse. “But… I want to do it differently. Not horizontally. I want a vertical incision. From the sternum, through the navel, down to the pubic bone. I want… I want to see everything at once. The entire vertical axis.”

The official raised an eyebrow. “A more demanding incision. It cuts through the linea alba, the central connective tissue seam. Less muscle resistance, but more major vessels in the midline. Bleeding will be heavier and start sooner. And you will very likely rupture the bladder.”

“That’s fine with me,” said Andrea, standing up. Her legs felt like Jell-O, but she forced them to carry her. She began to undress; her movements were less ceremonious, more hurried and mechanical, as if she didn’t want to give herself too much time to think.

Her body came into view. She was similarly slender to Monika, but her curves were longer, more elongated. Her breasts were slightly smaller, her waist narrow. And her abdomen was different: long, with a flat, gentle curve structured by a clearly visible, vertical band of faint musculature. Her navel was not deep and round like Monika’s, but a narrow, elongated slit that lay in the center like a small vertical scar.

An erotically defined but not overly toned abdomen, which now trembled under the cold air and the merciless ceiling lights.

“I’ll kneel in the same position,” she said and walked over to the bloody spot on the parquet floor. She carefully pushed a piece of Monika’s intestine aside with her foot to find a clear spot for her knees. The contact with the warm, slippery mass made her shudder.

Then she lowered herself, sitting on her heels, just as Monika had done. The parquet floor beneath her knees was damp and sticky with blood and other fluids. The proximity to Monika’s corpse, the smell now rising directly up at her from below, was overwhelming. It smelled of death, of a meal being digested, of the most intimate privacy ever made public.

The officer bent down, picked up the tanto, roughly wiped the blade with the clean end of his handkerchief—a pointless gesture given its impending use—and handed it to Andrea. The metal was still warm from inside Monika’s body.

Andrea took the knife. The handle was slippery with dried and fresh blood. She had to grip it tightly. She took a deep breath, trying to find the right spot. With her left hand, she ran her fingers over her own upper abdomen. She felt the hard ridge of her sternum at the base of her ribs. About three finger-widths below that, along the midline, she found a softer spot. Here, directly in the line between her breasts, it should begin. The vertical path led straight through her elongated navel down to the pubic symphysis. A monumental seam that she herself would cut.

She placed the tip of the tanto at this spot high on her upper abdomen. The pressure was immediately uncomfortable, a concentrated, threatening point. She pressed down.

Nothing happened. The tip slipped off the taut skin, leaving only a red mark. A frustrated gasp escaped her. She tried again, with more force. Again the blade slipped; this time it scraped lightly across the skin, leaving a thin, red line. Panic rose within her. She couldn’t even make the first incision.

“The skin is very taut and resilient here,” the officer commented neutrally, as if observing a technical problem. “You need to make a decisive, purposeful thrust. Don’t let it slip. Secure the tip and pierce through.”

Andrea nodded, closed her eyes for a moment, and gathered all her strength. This time she gripped the handle with both hands, placing her thumbs on the end of the shaft to apply maximum pressure. She positioned the tip again, feeling it dig into her skin. Then, with a short, brutal jerk of her shoulders and torso, she thrust forward.

    *Rrrt-TACK!*

A different sound than with Monika. Sharper, more abrupt. The tip had pierced the skin and penetrated about a centimeter deep. An immediate, lightning-like pain shot through her. “Aah!” She flinched back, nearly dropping the knife. It now stood crookedly in her upper abdomen, an absurd, towering spike. Still hardly any blood.

She had to go deeper. Much deeper. The thought of driving the blade through the layers of her own upper abdomen was almost paralyzing. She looked over at Monika’s lifeless form. *She did it.* The thought gave her a perverse strength.

She gripped the handle again, straightened the blade, and began to push.

The resistance was immense, but different from Monika’s transverse muscles. Here, in the midline, she encountered the linea alba, a sinewy, fibrous sheet of connective tissue. It was tough, rubbery. She had to shift her entire weight into her arms, lean forward to muster enough strength.

    *Krrrk… rits… crack.*

A crackling, fibrous tearing, interrupted by small, snapping sounds as tiny strands of tendon gave way. The blade moved slowly, agonizingly slowly, further inward. With every millimeter she advanced, a new star-like pain exploded in her consciousness.

She groaned, a continuous, deep “Uhhhhhnnnnn…,” vibrating with her breath. Sweat poured down her back in streams, mixing with the blood that was now slowly beginning to seep from the puncture site.

It wasn’t until the third big, desperate thrust, accompanied by a guttural scream—“NOW!”—that the blade suddenly pierced a final barrier and slid several centimeters deeper, almost effortlessly, into the open abdominal cavity.

    *Slurp-gulp.*

This sucking, internal sound was even worse than with Monika, because it was happening higher up in her body. An immediate, convulsive gag reflex shook her as the tip grazed her liver or perhaps even penetrated the fundus of her stomach. A pressing, spreading pain, as if a hot balloon were inflating in her upper abdomen, nearly made her faint. She doubled over, coughing dryly.

“Keep going,” she hissed to herself. “All the way to the hilt.”

In an act of pure, animalistic willpower, she repeated the horrific procedure she had observed Monika performing: build up pressure, gain a centimeter, pause, fight against the wave-like pain that accompanied every thrust, then apply pressure again. Every forward movement was accompanied by her body’s own destructive soundtrack.

    *Rit-rat-a-tack… crunch… gurgle.*

Her sounds were no longer articulate screams, but gasping, grunting explosions of agony. “Ghhaa! Uff! Khhh!” Her body twitched and convulsed uncontrollably, but her hands, though shaky, did not let go of the handle.

On the fourth such step, she felt the wooden handle strike her skin with a soft *plop*. The knife was buried in her up to the hilt, just below her sternum. The entire blade was sunk into her abdominal cavity, a cold foreign object amidst her warm, injured organs.

She paused, slumped forward, breathing in short, gasping bursts. The pain was monumental. It wasn’t a single pain; it was a landscape of pain, an entire universe of it. Deep, stabbing, pressing, burning, throbbing—each torment had occupied its own region within her.

She felt her liver thud against the blade, a dull, heavy thud. She felt her stomach cramp as if it were recoiling in disgust at the intruder. She felt the quiet, ticking race of her own panicked heart hammering against her ribs.

She opened her eyes and looked down. The sight was surreal: from her otherwise flat, graceful upper abdomen, the simple wooden handle of the tanto jutted out like the handle of a stake driven into her. The wound was still small; blood seeped only slowly around the entry point.

But now came the real work: the vertical cut. The liberation. She had to guide the blade downward, through her navel, all the way down to her pubis.

She clenched the handle, her knuckles white as marble. She twisted the blade inside, an unimaginable act of self-mutilation that unleashed a new, screaming pain. She tilted the blade so that it pointed downward, toward her navel.

    Then she began to cut.

She pulled the knife back about two centimeters from the wound. A warm stream of blood followed immediately, spurting over her chest and stomach. *Splash.* Then she thrust it back in—and at the same time with a powerful, downward pull.

    *RRRRIIIIITZENDE-ZERRREISSEN!*

The sound was horrific, a long, screeching tearing of tissue. The blade tore through the fibrous linea alba, through fine muscle fibers, through fatty tissue. The vertical wound opened to a length of about five centimeters.

And now, unlike with Monika’s horizontal cut, something else immediately came into view: not intestine, but a dark red, shiny, lobe-shaped organ pulsing in the gaping wound. A portion of her liver.

Andrea screamed. A long, piercing scream that dwarfed all previous sounds. “AAAAIIIIEEEEEE—GHHHHAAA!” The pain was immeasurable. The liver is an extremely pain-sensitive organ, crisscrossed by nerves and surrounded by a delicate capsule. The blade had torn into it, perhaps even cut a small wedge out of it. The pain was a dull, burning burst that spread in all directions.

She couldn’t stop. The urge to end it was stronger than the pain. She repeated the motion: pulling out a bit, thrusting in with a downward pull. A mechanical, horrific cycle.

    *Ratchet-gulp-slurp.*
    *Ritche-squeak.*

With each cycle, the vertical gash in her abdomen opened wider. After the blade had passed her navel, the contents of the wound changed. The lobe of liver vanished upward, and other things became visible. The pinkish-gray, folded stomach, contracting spasmodically. Then, as the blade split the navel itself—a distinct, small, crackling *pop*—the first pale pink loops of the small intestine gushed out, mixed with yellowish fatty tissue (the omentum), which had lain over the entrails like a protective but now shredded veil.

The smell became more intense, more complex. The sharp, sour smell of stomach acid joined in as the blade grazed the stomach. The sweetish, metallic scent of liver blood. The acrid smell of ammonia from the intestines. Everything mingled into a cloud of inner being that filled the room.

Body fluids dripped in a steady stream from Andrea’s opened abdominal cavity. Blood, bile, digestive juices, lymph. It pooled between her bent legs, forming a warm, colored puddle on the parquet floor that mingled with Monika’s. Her knees were literally standing in a pulp of her own and the remains of Monika’s entrails.

Andrea’s world shrank to the rhythm of pain, tension, and the visceral feedback of her body opening up. Her screams had degenerated into a hoarse, gasping whimper. “Hhh… hhh… aah… aah…” Her gaze was glassy, fixed on the spreading chaos in her lap. She saw her own organs, saw how they worked, how they twitched in their death throes. It was terrible. It was fascinating. It was the ultimate truth.

She pulled and thrust, further and further, an automaton-like executor of her own will. The blade approached the pubic bone. Just before it reached it, with one last, brutal jerk, she severed something that triggered a sudden, violent gush of a clear, warm liquid, which spurted down her thighs and onto the floor.

    *Ssssssssch—*

It wasn’t blood. It was urine. She had ruptured her bladder. The sharp, characteristic smell of urine mingled with the already hellish scent. The liquid ran hot down her legs, mixing with the blood and intestinal secretions. A final humiliation, a last surrender of control.

The knife couldn’t go any further. The handle struck her pubic bone. The vertical cut was complete. A gaping wound about thirty centimeters long stretched from her upper abdomen down to her pubic area. Her abdominal wall hung apart in two large, bloody flaps.

Exposed in the cavity lay a large portion of her digestive tract: liver, stomach, a tangle of small intestine loops, the beginning of the large intestine, all covered by a shiny film of blood and serous fluids, all still warm and alive with a sluggish, peristaltic twitch.

Andrea dropped the knife. It clattered to the floor. Her arms fell limply at her sides. She was at the end of her strength. The blood loss was enormous. A cold shiver ran over her, starting in her fingers and toes and creeping inward. The throbbing pain began to subside, replaced by a numbing, heavy numbness. She was exhausted, empty, but also… fulfilled.

Her gaze, cloudy and fading, wandered over the panorama of her own entrails. Then she looked over at the piece of intestine that Monika had torn out and that lay on the floor beside her. The final agreement. The final act.

In a movement that was more instinct than will, her trembling, blood-smeared hand reached for one of the warm, slippery loops of small intestine oozing from her own wound. She clasped the moist, smooth tissue. It felt like a warm, living tube. With a final effort, she pulled out a section about twenty centimeters long, not tearing it off, but severing it from its connections with a blunt, crushing tug. *Rip.*

She held the piece of her own small intestine in her hand. It was pale pink, translucent, with fine blood vessels beneath. It smelled intensely of itself, of intestine, of life.

She brought it to her mouth.

Her teeth closed on her own tissue. The taste was overwhelming, strange and familiar at the same time. Salty, metallic (from the blood), with a subtle, unmistakable sweetness and an undertone of something fundamentally organic, almost earthy. The texture was tough, rubbery; she had to chew, tear. It was not food. It was a communion. The ultimate autophagy. She was eating a piece of her own soul, of the seat of her life, as she had believed it to be.

As she chewed, her upper body slowly slumped forward. The cold spread through her chest. Her gaze went blank. The last thing she saw was the jumbled, colorful pattern of her own and Monika’s entrails on the dark parquet floor, mingled into a single, hideous, and yet somehow beautiful work of art of liberation.

Then it was all over for Andrea, too. The silence that fell over the room was now absolute, broken only by the soft dripping of fluid from the edge of the bloody pool onto the floor.

The snuff officer waited a few more minutes, then performed the same quick pulse check on both women. He noted the time in his logbook. His work was done. He collected the two signed contracts and put them in his briefcase. He left the bloody tanto where it lay; it belonged to the clients and would be disposed of with the bodies.

He put on his trench coat, cast a final, indifferent glance at the scene of the double evisceration, at the two young women who had slumped in the midst of their own exposed innards. Outside, the November rain lashed unabated against the window.

“Mission accomplished,” he muttered to himself and left the apartment, letting the door fall quietly shut. Behind him remained only the silent, stinking truth of the flesh, freed from the illusions of the mind, in a world that had long since ceased to ask for meaning.
