    You'll probably want to check out a lot of OVAs around the timespan of 80s-90s. There was a lot of boundary pushing in that time due to more lax regulations, leading to a lot of shocking and gruesome animations which were routinely cut into gifs and circulated on imageboards later on.

    not sure if it counts, but mai-chan no nichijou is a pretty infamous one volume guro manga. particularly for the ending scene, which was really shocking even to me, as a guro vet.
