The law states that any child over the age of 14 can be volunteered to be put to death by their parents Jacob disobeys his abusive single father and because his dad is a highly respected member of the community he is sentenced to a slow and agonizing death being burned at the stake. Despite his terrified pleas for his life Jacob is burned alive in front of a raucous jeering crowd in the town square.
